South Africa Upgrades Its Airports for the 2010 Soccer World Cup

in Airline Jobs

The year 2010 is the dawn of a new decade, and it is also the year of the much anticipated Soccer World Cup to be held in South Africa. Most of South Africa is upgrading all areas of transportation and facilities for this huge international event, and part of this is upgrading all of the international airports including O.R Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, and Cape Town International Airport. The upgrades are not only to improve the airport facilities, but to improve the customer service, airport terminals, parking, luggage areas, and much more.

At O.R Tambo International there has been $1.1 billion worth of renovations. These include a double storey parking garage that offers an additional 5200 parking bays. The domestic and international arrivals and departures areas have been modernized and expanded to accommodate all the extra people that are expected to flood to South Africa during 2010. The concourse has been expanded to accommodation more passengers and their luggage at the ticket counters, and more retail space has also been added so there will be more airport careers offered in the new future. This expansion is to assist more passengers to be serviced quicker. The road expansion is also meant to reduce the traffic congestion from the influx of visitors to S.A.

There is also a large, environmentally friendly pier that has been added to the international arrivals and departures section of the airport. This offers much more lounge space, commercial airside areas, boarding gates, and more. It enables passengers to get to their boarding gates much quicker through a series of air tunnels connecting all the areas of the airport. There is also a deck being added where people can relax while waiting for their flight. The huge apron development boasts nine new air bridges and there is space for 4 Airbus A380. There will be a new cargo handling facility to increase the efficiency of the air travel, and this also means lots more airport and airline jobs.

At Cape Town International the $517 million construction is already partly completed with a large international terminal addition as well as a central processing unit. There is another road being built above the existing road to accommodation higher traffic volumes, and the new parking garages and linking tunnels have already been completed. There are now an additional 2500 parking bays. Aside from the cars, the planes also require more parking space and new parking stands and bridges are going to be built.

With the new constructions that are taking place there is plenty of opportunity for jobs whether they are in the actual construction side of things working for the ACSA (Airports Company of South Africa), at the new airport terminals, at the boarding gates as airport security, working at the airline counters, in any restaurants, coffee shops, or other retail outlets.

In Durban, it has been announced that the old Durban Airport will be decommissioned in the first few months of 2010, once the brand new King Shaka International Airport (after the famous Zulu Chief) at La Mercy is open for business. This will be a passenger and freight airport with plenty of other constructions to roads, railways, busses, tram system, and harbor taking place as well. The airport, costing approximately $860 million, will be the third largest in the country, and the old Durban airport is being decommissioned due to the fact that the runway area is too small to accommodation a full Boeing 747. The airport will initially be able to accommodation 18 passenger aircrafts, including the new Airbus A380 if required. There will also be a large and modern retail section which is also opening a lot of job opportunities. To date the construction has already provided over 3000 jobs in Durban, and it is expected that more than 6000 jobs will be created once the airport opens.
