The newest member of the Carnival fleet, Carnival Magic, made its debut appearance in the U.S. serenaded by Grammy Award winning band Maroon 5 there to perform at the celebration in Galveston, the ship’s homeport. Over 4000 guests turned up to witness the 3690 passenger vessel sail into Galveston, Texas, after completing its Transatlantic voyage. They were then treated to an exclusive hour long concert from Maroon 5 set to the backdrop of the ship at Pier 21.

Carnival Cruise Lines President and CEO, Gerry Cahill, said, “Today marks a big day for Carnival Cruise Lines as we introduce the spectacular new Carnival Magic to its U.S. homeport of Galveston, Texas. City officials made the announcement last week that there would be a new pier that has the capacity for the world’s largest cruise liners. The pier is 1200 foot long and will allow 2 large cruise liners to dock on either end at the same time. At a cost of $6 million, the new pier has been discussed for more than a decade and will be funded by the transportation bond. At least 200 new cruise ship jobs could be created in Galway Harbor in Ireland, beginning in the year 2013. The Galway Harbor company has €120 million plans for a deepwater Harbor development for cruise ships north of the Marina. In 2009 The Marina was recently upgraded for the Volvo Ocean race, now they are planning to host the largest cruise liners in the world. Executives from all the major cruise companies are visiting Galway Bay this month during the Galway Oyster Festival. The largest cruise liner to ever be built and named in Germany, Celebrity Silhouette, was just launched at the Graasbrook Terminal in Hafen City, Hamburg on Thursday and will be one of 120 cruise liners to visit the port during 2011. Celebrity Silhouette from Celebrity Cruises cost £500 million to build and can accommodate more than 2880 passengers. It weighs in at 122,000 gross registered tons, and is more than 315 meters long.

“We are immensely proud that our German-made cruise ship will enjoy its prestigious naming ceremony in Germany – a first for Celebrity Cruises,” explained the president of Celebrity Cruises, Dan Hanrahan.

“Celebrity Cruises has a longstanding partnership with shipbuilder Meyer Werft, and the celebrations in Hamburg are a gesture of thanks to all those involved in creating Celebrity Silhouette. As a global business, it’s exciting to officially launch our ships in destinations that are major markets for our brand.”

New resorts opening in the Bahamas and Australia are bringing over 800 beach resort jobs to those areas in the next few months. The development in Australia, called the Wyndham Hervey Bay Resort, cost $120 million and is situated along the Fraser Coast. It will offer about 100 hospitality jobs to the area and developer Charles Richards unveiled the resort group’s plans to attract tourists and investors.

He told local dignitaries and business leaders in a recent meeting, “The mass media buy would include setting up billboards promoting the resort and the Fraser Coast at hot spots around the country including Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport which has an annual tourist traffic flow of more than 63 million.”

He also stated that the development has been a long process and there were times during the global financial crises that hit the world, they were skeptical about even making it. They prevailed and because of this they are able to over 120 resort jobs to the region, and according to Richards, “at least 80 percent will be local”.

Yet another resort development costing about $900 million is planned for the south Eleuthera area of the Bahamas. This resort project aims to introduce between 600 and 700 cruise and tourism related jobs. We anticipate doing on a separate parcel a cruise port, entertainment and retail district. We also anticipate that there will be somewhere between 500-1000 Bahamians employed on the construction phase under direct contract, and with support services and suppliers, there will be significantly more than that.”

He also addressed the resort employment on completion of the resort, stating, “On a permanent basis, the number of jobs in Phase I could be 600-700 people.”

The desire to introduce a cruise port to the area has been met with some concern although Mr. Evans has reassured everyone that they are environmentally conscious. He has also confirmed that his development would not be using Government land.

“We ultimately desire to put a cruise port in there. The cruise port generates a critical mass that supports a lot of the amenities package. We have looked at three different sites for a cruise port. All three sites, and whatever we’re doing, will be on private land, not government land. In our plans, we do not plan on asking the Government for any kind of Crown Land to do the project; all this will be done on private land.”

With regards to the environmental impact, Mr Evans said, “The cruise point would be designed such that no ‘cuts’ would have to be made in the ocean bed or coastline. The three locations have been looked at with environmental sensitivity, and in none of the three do we have to put in a cut into the beach or a cut into the ocean. We’re extremely sensitive to preserving the beauty and natural resources of land in the Bahamas.”

Charleston, South Carolina is a historic cargo port town, and many of its residents and business owners, along with city officials are positive about the proposal of more cruise ships, bringing cruise jobs to the area that will be encouraged by the development of a cruise terminal. The State Port Authority is looking at building a new $25 million cruise liner terminal on the Union Pier waterfront property along the Charleston Harbor and Cooper River. According to Joseph P. Riley Jr. the Mayor of Charleston, at a local community forum which was attended by 400 people, “This will create jobs. There’s no issue of Charleston becoming a cruise ship Mecca. We’re not the Bahamas.”

However, there are those opposed to the idea, namely the Coastal Conservation League, who has also submitted a proposal for the area to become a multi use office space and residential redevelopment, as per the Waterfront development in Chicago. “Very few cities in the world have dedicated prime waterfront property to cruise operations,” said Dana Beach, the group’s executive director.

Some of the residents do have problems with the development of a cruise ship terminal, citing traffic congestion, noise pollution, road closures, and tourist traffic as some of the reasons against the proposal. One resident, Leslie Scanlan commented that, “It’s an architectural invasion. A cruise ship is taller than the city steeples.” She justified this by referring to one of the longstanding city rules that new buildings should be shorter than the tallest of the church steeples in the city.

This historic city is not new to tourists, and just as the horse drawn carriage and bus tours are regulated, residents feel that the cruise ships should be regulated as well. Currently the plans for the terminal will increase the number of cruise ships from 90 to 104.

The CEO of the States Port Authority, James Newsome III, disagrees, saying, “I don’t know of a major port in the world that has a codified limit on the amount of business they can do. That would be bad for the port. Cruise lines are a niche market for the port, he said. “There are 4.5 million tourists in the city (annually). The cruise endeavor that we’re talking about is only 200,000 passengers. It’s in scale.”

The Preservation Society of Charleston is concerned about leaning too far in the direction of tourists and neglecting the city’s rich heritage. Evan Thompson, the executive director of the Society commented, “The sites that visitors come to see are houses that were built by multimillionaires in the 18th and 19th centuries and require major investments of private capital to maintain. We need to sustain and be vigilant about our quality of life and be sure we don’t tip the balance. We don’t want people to think that Charleston is for tourists only.”

Each vessel call generates almost $2 million for the local economy.”
