When looking for an internship to join, the main goal is to not only find one that will help you to further your career, but that will also pay you. Paid internships have been getting a lot of attention of late, as many believe that the unpaid internships are unethical. This said, many students also struggle to land the paid intern positions, because of the high demand for them. However, there are certain paid internships where the competition is very low.

These include internships currently available at the Cal State Fullerton’s College of Engineering and Computer Science in the College of Business and Economics department. These internships are different because students are not required to complete an internship in order to graduate in this area of study. This means that there are a low number of applicants for excellent paid internship positions.

The three areas of study are engineering, finance and accounting, and at the moment only have 22 interns in engineering, 4 in finance and only 3 in accounting. According to the Center for Internships and Community Engagement, these are also the internships that pay the highest.

Associate director of the Center for Internships and Community Engagement, Dawn Macy, said, “These internships happen in businesses. There are a lot of academic internships that occur in schools and nonprofit and those don’t have the ability to pay interns. It could also be that since these fields do not require students to do an academic internship, so in order to get academic interns they have to make it more inviting, more appealing to the students.”

According to Susamma Barua, the College of Engineering and Computer Science’s associate dean, the internships are not compulsory for graduation, but highly recommended to facilitate finding a full time job. “The companies are happy with the students. A lot of them, after the internship, actually hire the students as part-time employees. Very often the students turn that into a full-time job and they get their degree. Our students are expected to work with engineers in the company on a project that the company is working on. They expect our students to have analytical capabilities and understanding of the basic engineering concepts.”

The engineering interns usually get plenty of practical experience. Wally Portacio, an Engineering Major, enjoys the level of responsibility given to the interns. “In a smaller company you become everything since they have minimal resources. They put more responsibility on you compared to a bigger company where you can be doing nothing. I like the challenge of actually getting more responsibility. If anything it makes me a lot better as a student and as an engineer,” he said.

The internship program has been very well received by employers who want to expand the number of internships offered. If you want the chance to get a paid internship opportunity like this, visit Internship Finder today and join.

In one of the biggest internship opportunities, Fresno State is offering 700 paid teaching internships to undergraduates. This is made possible by a $4 million grant that was awarded to Fresno by the California Teaching Fellows Foundation, which is in partnership with the Fresno County Office of Education.

The program will allow the interns to work closely with over 30,000 students in 130 local schools for one year, who will benefit from the hands-on teaching experience. The grade students will also receive an intern as an after school mentor. The program aims to offer students the ability to learn the more practical side of teaching, and by the time they graduate, these students will have received an additional 2000 hours of extra experience in the classroom. They will earn $10 to $12 per hour.

The handover of the grant took place on Monday at a ceremony held at the Rowell Elementary School and it is hoped that this will be renewed next year. Of the 700 fellowships that are offered, about 500 are from Fresno State with community college students also eligible to participate.

In the past, additional teaching advice and support is given to the interns, but with the involvement of Fresno State, Professors can now also help to mentor the students, and they can use the career service center to get matched to available teaching jobs in local schools once they have graduated. Aside from helping with homework and assisting in the classroom, they can also organize soccer games, dance groups, and other recreational activities.

The internship program is very necessary in the low income schools where there is normally a high student to teacher ratio and many children can’t get that individual attention that they need. The interns provide them with the much needed educational support that will help them to do better in school and enjoy learning.

If you want to learn how to become an intern and find out more about other internship opportunities that you can get, make sure you visit Internship Finder and become a member today. Here you will have access to plenty of resources regarding internships including what companies look for in an intern, what is required when you are accepted into an internship program, and what to include in your application when you first look at internships. Additionally, you will have access to all the latest and most current internship programs, paid or unpaid, that you can browse through and decide which one you would prefer to apply for.

Some do offer credits as well as a small remuneration which is always preferred to pay for transportation costs and such.

According to studies, internships are the best way to go about finding out if you want to do a certain job, and likewise it is the best way for companies to find hard working, dedicated future employees, who are passionate about the industry and who have been able to get a good understanding of the company over the semester break or GAP year. With the summer months producing a heap of new interns that are job ready when they leave university, it is hoped that companies will continue the trend.

During an announcement made by President Barak Obama’s Jobs and Competitiveness Council, engineering internships have a great looking future. There is a current engineering shortage in the country, and to address this issue, 45 leaders in the industry have agreed to double the number of internships in the engineering field over the year and 5 new companies have committed to increasing their internships.

The Jobs Council expects to produce about 10,000 engineering graduates each year which will add about 6300 engineering opportunities for future hands-on technical training. The news came as welcome relief for some, like Connor Swielz, who said, “My younger brother wants to study engineering at (Michigan State University) when he’s done at (Washtenaw Community College). He’s capable of the work and grades are proof, but I’ve always worried how he’d make it. He doesn’t have many connections yet because he’s straight out of high school, and it seems like in order to get a job these days, you have to have internship experience. So I really hope this opens some doors for him.”

Swielz had considered going into the industry himself once, but various factors deterred him. He commented, “I always excelled in math and science, so I used to wonder if I could make it as an engineer too. But after learning how hard it is to get accepted into some of the programs and then not even have a secured job, I was reluctant.”

According to various government and business organizations, the internships will have a positive influence on students.

The CEO and President of Intel, Paul Otellini, spoke at the announcement, “Looking forward, this nation is at risk of a significant shortfall of qualified experts in science and math to meet the country’s needs. Today’s announcement is about inspiring and encouraging our next generation of engineers. It’s a private sector commitment working arm and arm with the government to accelerate the specialized skills needed for America to retain its technological pre-eminence.”

Everyone agrees that the change is necessary for the good of the engineering students. Senior student teacher Kellie Mack said, “We need to equip our students as best as we can and as early on as possible to make sure their eligible for their future plans. Everyone keeps saying ‘There’s a shortage of math teachers; there’s a shortage of science teachers; Americans can’t compete with foreign academics anymore.’ Well why is that? And why did it take this long to do something?”

During 1990 and 2000 the U.S graduates grew about 50% with the engineering students increasing by only 120 thousand. In comparison India and China churns out over 1 million engineering students each year.

Mack said, “I want to inspire my class as much as possible, and for them to understand how they can overcome anything. I don’t want anyone feeling like they can’t succeed, because that’s too much of our problem now.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has made 5 students very happy recently as the Science and Technology Council has once again offered their exciting 10 to 12 week internship program. The lucky students will get to meet and work with some of the top names in the film technology industry including Industrial Light and Magic, Rhythm and Hues, and Pixar Animation Studios.

Elizabeth Cohen, the internship’s program chair, said, “The Tech Council’s interns are selected for their academic excellence and their potential to make contributions to the future of the motion picture industry. The mentor-guided programs provide science and engineering experiences that will power enduring innovation and cultivate a profound appreciation of the cinematic art form.”

The 5 students selected for this prestigious internship program are:

Yunfeng Bai from Cornell University will be hosted by Industrial Light & Magic

Yeon Jin Lee from the University of California in Berkeley will be hosted by Pixar Animation Studios

Alex Pagliaro from the Rochester Institute of Technology will be hosted by the Science and Technology Council

Xinxin Zhang from the New York University will be hosted by Pixar Animation Studios

Yunfei Bai from the Georgia Institute of Technology will be hosted by Rhythm & Hues Studios

The students will get real life experience during this internship and it is one of the most sought after internships if they want to work in film technology, as a graphic designer, a sound engineer, in research and development and other film segments. When you get to intern with one of the most famous organizations in the world, it is an honor you can’t possibly turn down.

Aside from the internships in the film industry and other large corporations, you can also apply for government internships if you want to get into the industry of your choice and get first-hand experience of what the job is like.

Aside from being able to get a foot in the door, an internship is another great way of finding out whether or not you enjoy the type of job that you are working towards. Some people might have high hopes of being a lawyer, but once they intern at a law firm, they could take a step back and realize that they don’t actually enjoy the work.

It is easy to love working in film, but there are certain aspects to the technology and development side o things that these students might find challenging for example the long hours. There are always pros and cons to working in any industry, and an internship, paid or not, will give you the knowledge and experience that will let you decide whether you can live with the cons.

If you want to find out more about the different types of internships you can apply for, make sure you visit Internship Finder.

With schools all over the country coming to a close shortly for the summer vacation, summer job offers are flooding in from all over. This year’s job outlook for summer employment has been much better than last year, which was recorded as the worst year since 1948, largely due to the recession. This said, many of the summer positions that are offered for teens and young adults will be unpaid, but the experience received is priceless.

“The economy generally is picking up,” says one of the management professors at Virginia Commonwealth University, Robert Trumble. “If unemployment keeps inching down … it increases opportunities for teens in the summer.”

Summer work functions as an opportunity for school goers to see what jobs are out there, and it lets them figure out what they like and what they don’t like. The plus side is that they get to keep busy during the holidays and make some money at the same time.

According to the U.S Department of Labor, the statistics showed that the unemployment rate over July for teens was 19 percent, and although it is not expected to be as bad this year, students are encouraged to apply for summer jobs early to avoid disappointment and to avoid missing out on all the best opportunities.

According to Michael Erwin, a senior career advisor with CareerBUilder.com, the competition will be stiff for part time summer jobs. “Teens are running into college students and running into adults who have been out of the workforce for a while. They will have to be scrappy to get jobs.”

One other aspect to consider is that due to the shutting down of various federally funding youth job programs, it will be much harder for students to find summer employment opportunities. The loss of this stimulus money is hitting Baltimore hard, where 5000 students signed up for their YouthWorks Program, to help find summer employment for the 14 to 21 year old age group.

Brice Freeman, a Mayor’s Office of Employment Development spokesperson, said, “The program, which uses government funds and private donations to pay the youths’ wages, is about $1.5 million short of hitting its goal. Unless the money is raised, more than 1,000 youths who registered won’t get a job.”

To counteract the loss of the stimulus money, the government came up with a plan. The Labor Department announced a campaign here businesses are encouraged to hire 100,000 students across the country this summer. Banking giant Wells Fargo and Blackberry maker, Research in Motion have offered 1000 jobs, with 1500 teen summer jobs being offered by UPS.

Trumble encourages the youth, “Get moving now. Don’t wait. Summer may seem far off to teens, but not to employers that plan ahead. The more ambitious teens are already knocking on doors.”

The Whitehall Internship Program offered by the British Government is a way for those from disadvantaged backgrounds to learn about civil service careers and give them more experience in this field. Whitehall is divided into three government internships, all of which cater for a specific demographic, namely undergraduates, graduates, secondary school students, and college students. The three internship programs are as follows:

Fast Stream Summer Diversity Internship

This is for undergraduates and graduates and is designed to help develop a students’ skills in civil service as well as offering career prospects and providing an understand of what the civil service offers.

College Level Internship

This government internship is aimed at 16 to 17 year olds and is designed to offer school leavers work experience in the civil service for two weeks to gain insight into the industry.

Secondary School Level Internship

This internship is aimed at 13 to 14 year olds and is a simple day long program. Students will get to meet and talk to senior figures, whilst building their knowledge of the civil service as well as getting to work in a professional environment.

The college and secondary school level internship programs will be debuting for the first time this summer, and will be fully functional by summer 2012.

The Minister without Portfolio, Baroness Warsi said, “Obtaining an internship often depends on who, rather than what, you know. Many talented young people miss out simply because they lack the necessary contacts or face financial barriers when internships are unpaid. These schemes will give students a real start in life by not only providing skills and experiences that they can draw on when looking for jobs but the programs will broaden their horizons and raise their aspirations.”

Following these internship programs being announced, it was also announced that no informal internships would be offered anymore starting from 2012. The head of the Civil Service, Sir Gus O’Donnell commented on the internships on offer, “We need people who are passionate and have a sense of pride about delivering and improving services, have a professional approach to their work and are flexible and adaptable to change. The Summer Diversity Internship Program is developed to give an insight into the wide ranging opportunities across the Civil Service.”
