Turning your passion for sport into a career is the goal of many, and with sports management jobs, including becoming a sports agent, you have the ability to do just that! With semi professional and professional athletes so pressurized to perform well in order to start and maintain their careers, sports agents are needed to manage their business for them to let them concentrate on their games.

Senior vice president of IMG and global director of golf clients, Clarke Jones, explained how he got into the business, “I liked the idea of being able to combine two interests, business and sport, in my career. While that was what led me to the business initially, there have been so many learning opportunities and great experiences in the industry that I didn’t realize would be possible at the time.”

Sports management, however, is not a simple job and no matter how big a sports fan you are, competition is cut throat. According to Adam Pincus, a South University Online legal instructor, “Becoming a successful sports agent is definitely considered to be competitive. There are four main professional sports leagues in the United States and there are only so many players in each league. So there is, to some degree, a limited amount of clients to represent. Athletes typically hire sports agents to represent them in contract negotiations with their respective team, or to field offers from several teams if the client is a ‘free agent’ and available to sign a contract with any team.”

Although sports are highly competitive from high school level, Gary Glick, the president and founder of Synergy Sports, says, “A college football player cannot sign with a sports agent until after the last game of their senior year. Although I cannot sign them during the football season, I observe the players by scouting the football games, maintaining contacts with different schools, and attending agent-player week. Most of the schools in the Big 12, have agent-player week. As an agent, you have to be registered in the state and with each school. Through that system the school knows who you are.”

Through this system, the process of athletes signing with agents is done fairly and legally. The names of the eligible players are given to the agents who will be sent an invite to the agent-player week.

So what do you need to do as a sports agent? Well, 99 % of the time, once an athlete has signed with an agent, they work with them for the duration of their sports career. Your responsibility will be to look after your player, ensuring that they get the best possible representation, by creating a hype around them. You will need to negotiate contracts with teams, sign advertising deals, create marketing partnerships, and be on hand to guide and support them through the many issues that will come up during their career.

Jones says, “It’s rewarding to see them succeed because you know you’ve done your job for them.”

Another aspect to being a sporting agent, considered number one by Steven Jeffers of Elite Sports Agency, is to ensure that all the laws and guidelines of the various athletic associations are followed. Jeffers commented, “The second-most important function is to maximize our client’s worth to teams in which we are negotiating a contract for. At times we have to take less to become successful and that also includes our clients taking less money to have better opportunities in the near future and prolonging their professional careers.”

Pincus added, “Much like buying or selling a home, the agent needs to be aware of the fair market value of their client and factor in any other particulars that may be relevant to the negotiation.”

As you can see, getting a sports agent job requires a lot of preparation, research, and great negotiation skills in order to become a success. To learn more about how to become a top sports agent, visit Sports Career Finder right away.

The Waterford Institute of Technology is going to be getting a new sports arena, meaning around 200 sports jobs will be available in the Waterford City area. The multipurpose arena is going to cost 1.5 million Euros and will be built on the outskirts of Waterford City at Carriganore.

There will be 4 playing pitches, and a large conference center with a seating capacity of 2000, along with catering and ancillary sports facilities, with the conference center doubling as an exam room for WIT students. This sports facility will complement the recently opened 8.5 Million Euro WIT Sports Arena and will integrate completely with the existing changing rooms and other outdoor pitches.

Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin, who turned the first sod at a ceremony, said that the project had huge potential to become a world class sports venue showcasing hurling contests, which is a unique sport in Ireland. “It is a very good example of co-operation between institutions such as the GAA, WIT and private enterprise which will yield substantial benefits for athletes, students and other young people as well as the community as a whole, while creating a centre of sport excellence in Waterford which can be an example of best practice for the rest of the country,” Howlin said.

Councilor Liam Brazil, GAA president Christy Cooney, WIT acting president Tony McFeely, and WIT chairman Dr Donal Ormonde also attended the ceremony with Mr Cooney commented on what a “superb” project it is.

“Waterford IT has produced a template based on the highest possible standards in their development of this facility, one for others to follow. The sporting pluses – for Gaelic games in particular – arising from this facility are clear for all to see, but the possible knock-on from such an initiative is not restricted to sporting activity alone.” Dr Ormonde added that the facilities are going to be “significant addition to the southeast region.”

The USTA (United States Tennis Association) hosted a job fair to find sports job applicants to take part in this year’s U.S Open, which is going to be held in Queens. Hundreds of hopefuls turned up to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Corona Park where the job fair was being held and had the chance to check out the various employment opportunities there were.

The major tennis tournament will require hundreds of staff, and the job fair merely acted as an initial stage of the hiring process. There are many other open sports jobs available which you can learn about by visiting the official teamusopentennis.com website.

The managing director of the Tennis Center, Danny Zausner, is looking to hire about 5,500 people to work on sports stadium jobs such as security and ticket sales, as well as transportation, janitorial, merchandising and more. The only requirement is that workers be available to work every day of the tournament which takes place between the 22nd August and 11th September.

Zausner said, “It is critical that we get people who can work for the duration of the event. That is why we decided to hold this job fair. It’s a fact finding mission to show what jobs are available. We want people to visit every table and gather as much information as possible.”

For many people looking for work, this provided them with a much needed opportunity to get involved in sports and get work, even if it just for the summer. Students get much needed experience while they are on their summer break with the U.S Open being in town as Chandrika Patel, a human resources student, hopes, “I love all sports and I felt like this would be a great way to get some fun experience. This is a great chance to combine sports and human resources.”

One Awilda Gotay from Queens was there to apply for a job, coming back after working for Levy Restaurants who handled the food for last year’s Open. “It was such a great experience,” Gotay said. “Everyone got along like a team. And the people who run it couldn’t have been nicer.”

The job fair was just the beginning and there are many other jobs that still need to be filled in terms of maintenance employees, drivers, food and beverage vendors, merchandise sellers, ticket takers, and more.

Zausner said, “We truly believe that the US Open experience starts with our employees. We’re famous for providing a one-of-a-kind experience to our more than 700,000 guests, whether they’re celebrities and foreign dignitaries or a family out to have a good time.”

In order to recruit the best candidates for the various sports positions, USTA has partnered with BRANDEMiX which specializes in employer branding. Their CEO, Jody Ordioni said, “We connect brands to employees and to potential employees, and the US Open is a fantastic brand. Their eagerness to use social media to reach job applicants shows that every organization, large or small, should be marketing in that space.”

Aside from the plethora of students who showed up, the Open also attracted those who wanted an exciting summer opportunity including teacher, retirees, former police officers, sports fans among others. Zausner commented, “Whatever your position, it’s three weeks you’ll never forget.”

For more information on the various types of sporting jobs you can get including sports marketing jobs, and sports broadcast jobs, visit Sports Career Finder right away.

For the last 6 months, the construction of the Provident Bank Park in Ramapo, New York, has been underway providing more than 600 construction and building jobs in the area, and once completed, the new stadium, home to the Rockland Boulders minor league baseball team, will create more than 150 game day sports jobs. There have been various job fairs hosted by the Boulders team and in one of the recent ones, 490 job seekers attended.

This sports park has the ability to provide people in the area with much needed jobs, like 25 year old graduate, Kelly Baird, who sent in her resume to work as a production engineer in the control room. This will be the first job she has had since graduating from the University of West Virginia in 2009.

During the off season, 20 permanent staff members will still be employed to run the smaller operations that will take place in the park such as hosting parties and events. They will also have full time positions open for sports marketing and sales.

The various sports stadium jobs will include:

Customer service representatives
Mascot
Official scorer
PA announcer
Parking lot attendants
Ushers
Retail manager/staff
Spirit squad
Ticket sellers
Ticket takers
Chef
Catering manager and suite caterers
Concessions supervisor
Warehouse supervisor
Catering
Cooks
Dishwashers
Warehouse runners
General concessions

For the construction staff, the sports stadium has been a blessing due to the economic downturn and with the 6.5 % unemployment rate at the beginning of the year it has been hard for many of the locals. According to Phil Tisi, the assistant Ramapo Supervisor, “A lot of these construction workers haven’t had jobs in several years. In some cases, the stadium might have saved their house.”

The many sports jobs that are available at this stadium will be filled over the next few weeks and throughout the year it is expected that 600 jobs will be made available at the Rockland Boulders stadium.

To find out more about the different kinds of sports jobs you can get, you should check out Sports Job Finder and become a member.

In the sporting industry there are many career options that one has, but most of the time becoming a professional is very hard. Aside from the natural talent, you also have to have top quality coaching. Private sports coaching is also a line of work you can get involved in if you don’t make it as a professional. Private sports coaches can work with many different sportsmen and women coaching them in numerous sports, however, most private sports coaches prefer to specialize in a sport, usually the one that they played.

Sports coaches can work in many different places including for a sports academy where coaching clinics are held, at a country club or resort where professional coaches are required to help train the guests in sports like golf and tennis.

Kids coaching clinics are popular and this could be an ideal place to start your private sports coaching career. To become a star in any sport, you will normally need to start when you are young, and as such, many parents hire private coaches for their children once they show promise and interest in a particular sport. Solo sports like tennis and golf are normally the sport of choice, but private sports coaches are hired for players of team sports and can work individually with a player to condition the body, improve fitness, assist with injuries, give advice on nutrition, work on specific plays, and helping the athlete to master various techniques.

A private sports coach is there to push you to your limits, to bring out the best in your sporting ability and to teach you how to become a professional in your chosen sport.

Being a sports coach can also lead you to work with some professional sports teams and become their personal trainer. As a private coach, the pay will be quite high, depending on how experienced you are and where you coach, but as a professional team trainer or coach you can also expect to get very high salaries, depending on the team and the position.

When you look into both options be sure that you weigh up the pros and cons. For example, private coaching will ensure that you earn good money, but the work can sometimes be irregular as clients come and go. Landing a professional sports team or league contract will be great for job stability and will guarantee great pay, but you will be required to travel quite a lot for games.

If you want to find out more about private sports coaching, fitness training, and professional coaching among other sports industry career options, be sure to check out Sports Career Finder.

Continuing our countdown of the Best Jobs for 2011, we have already covered the job of a multimedia artist for video games.

The second featured job voted as one of the best for 2011 is that of athletic trainer. Athletic trainer jobs are in high demand, especially at high schools where the rigorous sports programs require more professional trainers in order to prevent injuries and prolong the sports careers of athletes who have not yet reached their full potential. It is your job to work with the athletics department to encourage healthy exercise regimes and correct eating. You will not only work in high schools, but professional athletes also require athletic trainers to help with body conditioning.

There are plenty of athletic trainer courses and training programs that you can get involved with, but for professional sporting associations and high schools a masters or doctorate degree is sometimes required. A specific license or registration may also be required in certain States. You will find however, that many employers pay for continuing education in athletic training and even relicensing fees.

As an athletic trainer you will work some long hours and occasionally over weekends of games and nights to prepare athletes, but in general the work is not highly stressful. You can expect to earn more than $41 thousand as a full time trainer with benefits and even as high as $65 thousand in some instances.

By 2018, the number of athletic trainer jobs is set to increase to 22,400 from just 16,300 in 2008, which is a 35 % climb. It is estimated that the majority of these new athletic and fitness training positions will open up in medical facilities, fitness centers and schools, so you should get your resume in today if you want to start working with future professional sports stars. If you have the skills and the experience you could get to work with some of the best athletes in the country.

If you want to learn more about athletic trainer jobs, sports fitness jobs, sports director jobs or any other sports related career then you should become a member of Sports Career Finder. You will gain access to a huge database of all the best sports jobs around including those in professional sports, college sports, sports media, sports agencies, sports facilities, sports product sales, and health and fitness.

You will learn about all the different kinds of sports jobs you can get along with how much they pay, what qualifications you require, how many jobs are available, what additional benefits there are, and how to apply. There is even a job board on the website where you can start searching for your dream sports job right away, including those as an athletic trainer. With this comprehensive resource, you will learn all you need to about a wide variety of sports jobs and related careers in the sporting industry.

Over the last few years, the Sport Illustrated Sportsman of the Year was a simple choice, albeit uninspiring, but this year everyone is talking about the new 2010 Sportsman of the Year, Drew Brees. Not only a star quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, bringing them out of NFL obscurity by leading them to Super Bowl victory in February, but also an inspiration to his city in term of all the charity work that he has done through his organization, the Brees Dream Foundation.

“Drew’s accomplishments go far beyond delivering a Super Bowl title to a notoriously long-suffering franchise,” said Terry McDonell, the Sports Illustrated group editor. “He has been a driving force in a battered city’s ongoing efforts to rebuild and renew while simultaneously resurrecting his own career.”

His charity was formed back in 2003 to help facilitate cancer research, as well as educate children in need. Over the year, the foundation has helped to rebuild homes, fund cancer centers and help intellectually challenged adults. Since Hurricane Katrina hit, his foundation has helped rebuild over 50 schools in New Orleans.

After Hurricane Katrina hit, many people put a lot of pressure on the Saints to “save the city”, but they are just sportsmen after all, however, Brees has risen to the challenge in more ways than one which is why he is so deserving of the Sportsman of the Year title.

“The more that I’ve learned about the award and that it goes well beyond what you accomplish on the field, that it’s very much about what you do off the field as well, with community service and your family, makes the award even more special to me,” Brees said.

Being a professional sportsman is what most people want when they go into playing sports at school level and with heroes to inspire them like Brees, some will make it, but for those who don’t, there are plenty of other sports jobs that are available, where you can still be involved in sports on a professional level.

For example, sports agents make a lot of money and work closely with all the top athletes. You can work for a large firm or even freelance as an individual agent. Other sports jobs include being a coach or manager of a pro team. You can also make a good sports career for yourself as a sports commentator or announcer, where your knowledge of certain sports will be a valuable resource to any media company that hires you.

Another sports career where you can work directly with top players, but are not actually involved in the sporting side of things that much is to be a sports physiotherapist. You will work with the team as their personal trainer or fitness coach and also get the physio they need when injured. You will have to study for this.

These are just some of the options, but to find out more and get a lot of details about the various sports jobs you can get, make sure you visit Sports Career Finder and become a member today.
