In the wake of the huge success following the Fifa 2010 World Cup, South Africa is ready to take on bigger and better things, and are talking about putting in a bid for the 2020 Olympic Games. According to Sam, the International Olympic Committee is very eager to give developing countries the opportunity to host the Olympic Games. “I can’t say that we will be going for 2020 or 2024, but we will be guided by the sporting movement in this country as to what we are going to do,” he concluded.
IOC president, Jacques Rogge, stated that with the “outstanding success” of the World Cup, that they would welcome a bid by South Africa. Deputy Sports Minister, Gert Oosthuizen, also mentioned that the SA government had already expressed interest in bidding for the Olympics, and that discussions with Sascoc were going to take place shortly.
