New $1.2 Billion Home for Delta at JFK Airport

in Airline Jobs, Job Search

JFK International Airport will be getting a makeover in its Delta Airlines Terminals, it was announced by Delta Airlines and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on Thursday. They plan to tear down the old Pan American WorldPort and spend $1.2 Billion to make the carrier’s home at JFK more effective, efficient, and able to see to more passengers, also offering about 6400 more airline and airport jobs in the process.

Currently Delta handles nearly a quarter of the annual traffic coming through JFK, equating to nearly 46 billion passengers. The upgrades will increase this capacity even further and improve customer experience.

Business travelers are the main focus of Delta Airlines, as these are the people who spend the most per mile. Delta already mentioned at the beginning of the year that they were willing to spend $1 billion to serve their business class, first class, and elite class travelers. The JFK project will be funded in part by Delta, and the rest will come from passenger facility charges and special project bonds.

The upgrade will include expanding Terminal 4 by 9 passenger gates which will effectively cancel out Terminal 3 which is the Pan American WorldPort Building. This will be torn down over a 24 month period. This terminal is outdated and does not meet the needs of the 21st century traveler with narrow corridors, limited security functions and being hard to keep in top condition for travelers.

Among the 6400 new airport jobs that will be created during the 3 year project, the economy of the area is also supposed to see activity in the region of $1.8 billion, with salary figures coming in at the $360 million mark thanks to the new JFK upgrades.
