College Football Looks to Increase the Number of Minority Coaches in its Major Positions

in Job Search, Sports Jobs

In a recent study of the NFL and college football in America, it was found that the number of minority head coaches, as well as offense and defense coaches, has been catching up over the past few years. According to the executive director of Black Coaches and Administrators, Floyd Keith, the number is still not where it should be. Since 2002, when the last study revealed that 3.5 percent of head coaches and 5 percent of offense and defense coordinators represented the minority, the number of minority coaches at college level has increased marginally, and currently in the NCAA’s Football Bowl Division there are 7.5 percent of head coaches and 15 percent offense and defense coordinators that are of the minority.

Keith compares the 7.5 percent to the nearly 19 percent that have head coaching positions in the NFL. Of the offense and defense coordinator jobs, the 15 percent breaks the record set in the 2008 season as found by the Institute for Diversity and Ethnics in Sport at the University of Florida. In college football, Keith adds that more must be done in order to prevent head coaches of the minority taking up positions in the NFL due to better pay and opportunity. He maintains that there needs to be more access and openings in the college levels.

The NCAA’s vice president for diversity and inclusion, Charlotte Westerhaus, commented that they are aware of the number of excellent players and coordinators of minority ready to take up head coaching positions, as they are on TV, in the media, and Athletic Directors know about them. The recent media attention that this issue is receiving is likely to improve the statistics and see more head coaches and coordinators of minority getting chosen in college football.
