Alberta Oil Sands Debate Heats Up

In an effort to reduce global warming, the Alberta Oil Sands project in Canada has taken a few knocks, to say the least. In the most recent Reuters Global Energy Summit held in Washington today, Steven Chu, the US Energy Secretary, stated that an agreement would have to be reached regarding the Oil Sands project and its impact on the environment. A firm believer in technology, Chu believes that this will be the answer to the Canada Oil Sands industry, which brings the largest supply of foreign crude oil into the US.

Unfortunately, whilst very effective and securing strong ties with Canada, the Oil Sands project does pose some environmental damage regarding deforestation, global warming, and water resources, which various environmental groups have pointed out. The governments of Canada and Alberta are trying to resolve the issue as quickly as possible to ensure that the various US environmental and energy policies do not place the industry at a disadvantage. The policy that was introduced at the Summit is the climate change bill and aims to limit the United State’s greenhouse gas emissions, and would require that about 85 % of all carbon producing companies carry permits. The bill must still be approved by several more committees, but the issue of oil sands will be brought up with the passing of this bill.

The production of crude oil from oil sands is a lengthy and energy consuming process. The resource if first mined in open pits or steam-pump aided wells, after which it is upgraded in facilities into lighter oil which is then sent to the refineries. Major oil manufacturers in Canada are already making progress with extracting the oil using cleaner methods, and Chu hopes that the with the use of technology, the Alberta Oil Sands project can continue to prosper and provide excellent, clean oil to the US in the wake of the climate change bill. Working in the Alberta Oil Sands project is exciting at this time, and various employees are needed to help with the production, energy solutions, cleaner refining and more. With the rise in crude oil prices, now is the perfect time to become a member of Oil Job Finder and apply for an Oil Sands job.
