The Pan American Games (Pan Am Games) is an exciting all American quad-annual sporting event, the next of which is to be held in 2011 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Bids are already coming for the 2015 Games due to be held in November, with Toronto, Canada making an astonishing $2.4 Billion bid for the hosting rights. Currently, other cities that are in the running are Lima, Peru, and Bogota, Columbia.

The Ontario Premier, Dalton McGuinty was handed a copy 233 page bid book by the Bid Chairman, David Petersen, which outlines the plans for the event including a $1 Billion athletes’ village. Petersen, who hopes that the extensive proposal would be enough to secure the event in 2015, presented the bid book to the president of the Pan American Sports Organization on Thursday 28th May 2009.

The Ontario government originally planned the budget for the Pan Am Games at $1.8 Billion, but was cut back in January by Premier Mc Guinty due to the struggling economy. Private investors as well as the other federal and provincial governments will make up the rest of the budget needed.

Toronto aims to win the bid therefore securing plenty of new tourism and sports job opportunities for the capital city, but also encouraging tourism and boosting the general economy of the country. There will be many jobs available if Toronto gets to host the Pan Am Games including those in construction, tourism, hospitality, sports, administration, and many others. The proposed athletes village is set to be constructed whether Toronto wins the bid or not, creating a mixed income neighborhood. Planning and the first stages of construction have already been started at the West Don Lands site along the waterfront, meaning that jobs are already being created and will continue until after 2015, if Toronto’s bid is successful.

Along with the athletes’ village, the bid also includes plans for 6 new state of the art sporting facilities in Toronto, Hamilton, and Markham, with 50 sports facilities in the Horseshoe region from the Niagara Falls to Minden and Oshawa.
