With the economic crisis affecting most states in the United States, North Dakota, along with Nebraska have been the least affected by unemployment. At 4.4 percent, they appear at the lower end of the jobless scale, with states including Nevada, Oregon, and California having the highest unemployment rates and incurring the most job losses.
According to the Labor Department, the recession is the longest it has been since World War II and has almost reached the highest rate of unemployment in history. The last recession, towards the end of 1982 was the worst, with unemployment and job losses peaking at 10.8 percent. Currently, the statistics show 9.4 percent nationwide and that it could break the record by next summer with an 11 percent prediction. In the West, the record was already reached in May with a high of 10.1 percent in joblessness.
The most recent states that were recorded has having the highest job loss rates were North Carolina, Rhode Island, Oregon, Florida, South Carolina, and Georgia. In amongst this terrible recession, it is good to know that North Dakota is surviving thanks largely to the oil industry there. The North Dakota boasts the largest amount of oil called the Bakken Formation. The state officials have even promoted the job opportunities in this region with a campaign titled Experience North Dakota. In 2008 North Dakota experienced the fastest economic increase in the United States of America with a growth rate of 7.3 percent.
