What You Need to Know About Yacht Crewing Jobs

in Cruise Jobs, Hospitality Jobs, Job Search, Yacht Crewing

If you want to get away from it all and travel around the globe, you will find that nothing beats the salty ocean breezes on board a yacht. Looking for work on a yacht, whether it is a luxury one or a charter yacht, can be quite tough. You have to understand many things about living on a yacht for a certain period of time including hygiene, etiquette, safety procedures and more. No matter what job you want to apply for, here are some tips and guidelines:

Hygiene on Board a Yacht

When you work in close confines with other crew members as well as with the people that are employing you, cleanliness and personal hygiene is of utmost importance. You will usually share a cabin with another member of staff, so you also have to make sure your space is neat and tidy. Bear in mind that due to the limited space, your luggage should be minimal. Take only the essentials such as one change of clothes (remember you will wear a uniform most of the time), underwear, toiletries (some yachts do give you stock however), a phone card, and perhaps a book to read.

Safety Guidelines for Yacht Crewing

When you are part of a yachting crew, whether you have a maritime job like a captain, engineer, steward, or first mate, or a hospitality job as a massage therapist, chef, or housekeeper, you will have to understand safety measures. Each yacht has its own specific safety rules that you will need to learn, but most jobs will require you to have completed a first aid course and many expect you to have a US Coast Guard License.

Working Hours and Conditions on Board a Charter Yacht

Charter yachts have set working hours depending on how many trips they do each day. Sometimes you will work per day doing many trips, and sometimes you will work for about 2 or 3 hours or so doing just one trip. There are some charter yacht jobs that require you to sleep over and some even have weekend excursions where your working hours will be for the entire trip.

Working Hours and Conditions on Board a Luxury Yacht

Luxury yachts normally employ yachting crew for the season. This could be year round, or it might just be for a certain month or two during the year. Many luxury yachts are based in the Caribbean Islands or other exotic locations like Greece, where you will travel around locally to all the smaller islands and ports within a set area. You will sleep on board the yacht and work for about 12 hours a day, but will always be on call in case any emergency arises.
