During the first half of 2009, Singapore has seen a rise in the number of passengers in the region by about 20 percent to 540 thousand.
With the 28 thousand square meter terminal, Singapore hopes to attract the largest cruise liners around the world and increase the number of passengers passing through reaching 1.6 million. This terminal is able to host 6800 passengers at any given time and the berth for cruise ships will be doubled. With this new construction, Singapore hopes to become the cruise hub of Asia which accounts for approximately 7 percent of the world’s cruise market.
The economy of Singapore is said to improve when the terminal is complete and according to observers, the cruise ship passengers and crew tend to spend about 30 percent more on accommodation, eating out, visiting places, and shopping among other things.
The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) owns the new terminal and are looking to appoint an operator by the end of the year. The tenders for this close on the 4th November. With the number of people boarding cruise liners globally, the need for an International terminal of this caliber was needed for Asia.
At the moment, despite the bad economic climate, the cruise liner industry has been booming and this year according to the Cruise Lines International Association based in the US, it will reach 13.5 million passengers. According to statistics, it is said to reach 27 million by the year 2020.
