Oil Industry Jobs in Africa

The sixteenth African Oil Week held in Cape Town saw delegates from various independent oil producers positive about the future of the oil industry in Africa. It was emphasized that African was at the forefront of the oil industry with many unexplored potential oil sites. There are currently 550 oil firms operating in Africa, and there are many more soon to follow, despite the economic crisis, volatile prices, and the geopolitical pressures.

Statistics show that Africa has a largely unexploited oil reserve with about 120 billion barrels, and a gas reserve of 500 trillion cubic feet. Oil producers are continuously interested in African oil specifically the opportunities in the sedimentary basin.

CEO of Global Pacific and Partners, Duncan Clarke, who addressed the delegation, mentioned that more than 800 independent oil companies would be operating in Africa by 2015 either for exploration purposes or for oil production. Clarke also mentioned his “Africa Vision 2040” which estimated that about 1250 oil companies would be operation in Africa by that time with between 50 and 100 being at an international level. He also anticipates that 25 of the operational companies would be state owned oil producers, and that 25 African States would have proven oil and gas reserves.

According to oil exploration company Surestream Petroleum MD, Africa is dominating the oil and gas industry in terms of getting the attention of the global oil and gas exploration companies. They are mainly focused on gas deposits in the West and North African countries namely Ethopia, Uganda, the Seychelles, and Madagascar.

For exploration and oil investments to really flourish in Africa, it was stated by CEO of Candax Energy, Mike Wood, that the oil price needed to remain at $70 per barrel. With the volatile prices, however, further exploration and oil production would not go ahead as rapidly.

The search for oil in other countries has reached a grinding halt, but with the global exploration and production companies turning their attentions to Africa, this could be the perfect place to look for oil and gas jobs.
