The George Best Belfast City Airport is due to open its brand new departure lounge in three weeks time, which is said to be able to handle 12 thousand passengers a day. The 6 million Pound investment into the terminal has seen the increase in retail and restaurant space by 60 percent with 20 new airport jobs being created.

This refurbishment is taking place in the airside lounge on the first floor, after a new trend was spotted in how passengers tend to use airports nowadays. It was found that most people prefer to check in and go through the security gates before they do their gift buying, shopping, and getting a bite to eat. This prompted the airport management at Belfast City Airport to rethink the functionality of its departure lounge.

Chief Executive of the Airport, Brian Ambrose, has said that passengers will see a remarkable improvement in the airport with shorter queues, better facilities, and the ability to accommodate the increase amount of passengers with ease and style.

It is estimated that the rest of the work to the terminal would be complete in March 2010 and designer, Doug Pilkington of BDP insinuated that the new terminal design would be an prototype for all domestic, international and business airports for the future.

Whilst new departure lounges aid passengers in Northern Ireland, sleep rooms are being introduced to airports in the United States. Atlanta Hartsfield Jackson Airport now offers 7 foot by 8 foot sleep rooms for passengers to make use of between flights for any purpose. You can catch up on some sleep with the special day beds, fresh blankets and comfortable pillows with disposable covers.

The rooms are equipped with a sound masking system, making it easier to relax and rest in between flights, as well as conduct some business. To this effect there is also a desk, phone, office chair, and WiFi connection. There is also an HDTV which can be converted into a computer monitor for connecting to the internet, or for checking the airport’s flight schedule.

The cost for staying in one of these sleep lounges is $30 for the first hour. After that you pay an additional $7.50 per 15 minutes.

With the new features and functions that airports are including to make the experience better for passengers, you can expect to find that many other airports are going to be following in their footsteps. This means that if you have the right qualifications and skills, you can get in on the action and apply for one of the new airport jobs that come available in the near future.
