Following the success of the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, it was feared that the 300 Million Pound “Bird’s Nest” Stadium would be one of the biggest white elephants in Olympic history. Since 2008, the stadium has been making money with paid tours where fans can dress up in Team China tracksuits and get photos taken on the track, as well as on winner’s rostrum as they show off their fake medals. This novelty has now started wearing off though with the numbers of tourists dropping to just 10 thousand a day from the staggering 50 thousand that used to queue up outside the gates at the beginning of the year.
Beijing’s government, who purchased a controlling stake in the stadium in August, has been looking for other ways to make the stadium more profitable and this includes building a restaurant and shopping complex. Earlier in the year the large scale Opera, Turandot, was held here, and a soccer match with Real Madrid is being planned for 2010. However, one of the newest ideas, currently being considered for the winter months, is to transform it into winter sports park, complete with ski ramps, snow, and artificial slopes for beginners and experts to enjoy, and where many seasonal sports related employment opportunities are available for Chinese citizens.
In Beijing there is not always snow during winter, so the snow will also be created artificially using special snow cannons, to ensure that there are always perfect powder conditions. Beijing is renowned for its gentle lake ice skating, but the owners are sure that the more adrenaline fueled winter sports park will attract many of the city’s new middle class, younger residents. The owners are estimating a turnout of 20 thousand people a day to the sports park.
According to Wu Jingjun, the president of the National Stadium Co Ltd, the stadium will always host events. From now on, there will be no seasons where the stadium is empty. With the assistance from the Chinese Government, it is hoped that many more events and therefore many new sports jobs will be created in Beijing.
