In an effort to improve the management and aid research into the salmon stocks in Western Alaska, Governor Sean Parnell has proposed funding of $1.3 million. This is included in the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s 2011 Fiscal Year budget and is hoped that this will help the economy in Western Alaska. This is major industry that people in this area rely upon, and the proposed budget will supply the correct tools needed to sustain and improve the industry even further.

The budget is going to allow for Alaska salmon fishing jobs in various areas.

These include projects in genetic research and analysis, aerial surveys of the Yukon River where the exchange of salmon occurs, and to help the Pilot Station Sonar operations. This will provide a more accurate count of the salmon numbers in the region and enable the department to provide a better estimate for fishing regulations and returns.

A statewide analysis is also due to be performed to assess the subsistence harvests to see if the needs are being effectively met. These various projects are all to ensure that the people of Alaska are able to live and earn a good income.
