Jobs in the cruise industry are picking up as construction began on the new Cairns cruise terminal which is being built in number 3 wharf shed. The Premier, Andrew Fraser had the honor of turning the first sod on the site, and with the $ 11 million contract being awarded to Hutchinson Builder, operating out of Cairns for the last 13 years, the build is expected to be a good one.
The best part about the building of the new cruise terminal is that 84 jobs are being awarded in the construction side of things as the build progresses. The heritage shed is being transformed into a modern multi functional cruise terminal which will also bring in plenty of jobs in the cruise industry.
The onshore cruise liner jobs will include retail, hospitality, administration, and marketing jobs among others. Aside from this, the economy would improve dramatically with the tens of thousands of cruise passengers that will be visiting on the numerous cruise liners that pull into the terminal.
Mr Fraser mentioned that the build should take a year to complete. As the area is a heritage site, the construction has been very carefully planned and will be built with assistance from heritage experts from the Department of Environment and Resource Management.
As far as the construction goes, the original railway racks will be preserved entering from Wharf Street and the shed timber frames will just have modern windows installed. The other items that will be specially treated and carefully conserved include the bronze bell, the clock tower, wharf bollards, the original timber doors, the central columns, and various historical signs and markings.
New items that are to be included in the design of the cruise terminal include artworks, special landscaping and feature pavements, as well as graphic displays and interpretive signs. It is expected that the multi functional terminal will also be used as a magnificent function venue as well as an extension of the convention center.
