Women’s Boxing to Become an Olympic Sport

in Job Search, Sports Jobs

As the 2012 Olympics in London approach, history will be made as women’s boxing is going to be one of the Olympic sports. The decision to include this as an Olympic sport officially has been met with some contention. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided last August that there would be 36 places for female fighters to compete in the London Games. The three classes have been included which are the flyweight category which is 48 to 51 kgs, the lightweight which is 56 to 60 kgs, and the middle weight which is 69 to 75 kgs. Olympic committee minister, Tessa Jowell, called this a “historic, landmark moment”.

The women boxers are pleased that they will be able to show everyone their skills and talent and are happy that they are going to be recognized in their sport. It is believed that the Olympic Games will improve the women’s boxing standards which at the moment are not very high. This will encourage more women to think about boxing professionally. The standard will improve and this will be further helped in the UK by a 2 million Pound funding into the Olympic squad by the UK Sport Agency over the next 30 months.

The world has also increased its women’s boxing with about 120 federations that have registered amateur female boxer. Of these there are expected to be about 20 countries competing in the 2012 Games. Most women start out doing boxing as a form of exercise to get fit, but many are skilled and become amateur boxers.
