With the 2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup just a few months away, South Africa has been upgrading all of its main airports in anticipation of the millions of tourists expected to arrive in June. The airports are completed or are due to be completed by the end of the month. With the upgrades, many jobs have been created over the last few years, but the completed airport terminals and aprons will now be ready to create many other airport jobs.

OR Tambo International Airport, known as Ortia, cost about $2.3 billion and is 90 percent complete with the 7 new aircraft aprons to be completed next month along with the multi-story parkade. The airport central terminal was completed in December and now has the capacity for 28 million passengers per year. The operational plans are due to be completed in May with 450000 passengers set to come through the airport in the first week of the World Cup starting on the 11 June.

The group manager of Acsa in charge of the operations said that about 45 slots were used an hour at Ortia, but now with the renovations, the airport can handle up to 120 thousand more than the norm during the June and July months. Acsa is also planning a 24 hour operation according to the match schedules, and they are also training staff to speak Spanish, Italian, French, and German.

The other airports around the country have also been doing renovations including Cape Town International Airport, Upington, Bloemfontein, East London, Kimberly, Port Elizabeth, and King Shaka International Airport in Kwa Zulu Natal. These airports are also all planning a dedicated terminal for the soccer teams with a public viewing area. Each terminal, apron, and parking renovation will provide more space for the tourists that are in South Africa for the World Cup event.
