In May and June this year, it has been announced that the National Skills Academy for Active Leisure will be offering nearly 3000 jobs to young people who have been involved in the sports and leisure sector before, but who are currently unemployed. The sports job offer extends for 6 months and includes training and employment. This boost came with the statistics from a recent poll done by the Office for National Statistics that showed more unemployment in the age category 18 to 24 year olds.
Thanks to the National Skills Academy, these jobs are being created with a long term goal in mind. Even though they are 6 monthly contracts and positions at the moment, the thought is that most could be transferred into permanent positions. The CEO of the National Skills Academy, Florence Orban told the media, “Our aim is to revolutionize our industry by staffing it with the best people with the best skills and training. There is a huge, untapped talent pool of young, enthusiastic people who just need a chance – a foot in the door – and that is exactly what they will get with the program. The successful candidates will be those who want to learn and want to make a real contribution to their employer, industry and community.”
The Minister for Sport, Gerry Sutcliffe, also added that the sports and leisure sector is a hard market to get into and that the Future Jobs Fund is helping a great deal in this regard. They also want to get a top notch sports system in place leading to the 2012 Olympic Games and the Paralymic Games in London. Some of the sports jobs and sports internships are going to be offered by Premier Sport, Fit for Sport, The Amateur Swimming Association, and Transforming A Generation (TAG), as well as partners like SkillsActive, Sport England, Sports Coach UK, Sports Leaders UK and various other community organizations.
