Some of the major oil companies have been working furiously on creating the world’s first liquefied natural gas plant (LNGP) due to the huge demand for energy in Asia. The competition is between companies including Royal Dutch Shell, Woodside based in Perth, Exxon Mobil, Inpex Corp based in Japan, and BHP Billiton among others. The process of the LNGP is to convert gas into a liquid form offshore on board a vessel instead of the traditional pipeline way.
At the moment the leading innovator is Royal Dutch Shell who is working on the production of a floating facility in Browse Basin, Western Australia. Inpex Corp is working on a liquefied natural gas plant in the Abadi field in Indonesia, while Woodside has aims of creating a floating facility in the Timor Sea collaborating with Shell. While this process is deemed to be very beneficial for environmental reasons among other, the costs have not yet been established as there is to date no complete floating plant, but they are expected to be quite high. One thing for sure is that this new concept could spell tons more oil and gas job opportunities.
