If you thought that baseball was a strictly American game – think again. With the World Baseball Classics becoming more and more popular each year, more and more countries are now participating and including the sport readily, specifically as a national sport. So much so, that the International Baseball Federation is pitching to have the sport included in the 2016 Olympic Games. The 2009 World Baseball Classic was a 10 reel tournament with Japan and Korea in the finals. This final saw the highest television ratings for any sport in Japan and Korea. The USA is now currently placed 4th in the world which just shows the determination and skills from players in other countries around the world. Some other countries that took part in the championships included:
- Dominican Republic
- South Africa
- Netherlands
- China
- Venezuela
- Australia
- Canada
- Mexico
- Italy
- Panama
- Cuba
Baseball had been an Olympic sport since 1992, but it was decided to exclude the sport from the 2012 games because it was not deemed popular enough, although the decision for the MLB (Major League Baseball) to not send its top players for fear of injury might have also had something to do with this. The delegation currently has to compete against the inclusion of 6 other worthy sports into the program namely rugby, roller sports, karate, squash and softball. One of the main considerations is that the host country has to have a strong team, which makes the 2016 nominees perfect. The likely candidates seem to be Chicago, Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro or Madrid. With baseball growing to other countries like India you can be sure to find plenty of sports jobs anywhere in the world working behind the scenes as a manager, marketing director, clothing manufacturer, or actually taking part.
