The Bombardier Learjet facility in Wichita is awaiting approval for a $52.7 million expansion, which is set to bring over 400 high paying aviation jobs to the Wichita region. Along with tax abatements, Bombardier is also requesting an investment of $1 million towards the expansion from city and county governments, as well as $2 million from an economic development grant that the Airport Authority is applying for. The expansion will consist of 3 new buildings that will be used for flight testing, as well as relocate some of its IT and engineering functions to the Wichita facility.

Vice President of strategic projects for Bombardier Learjet, John Dieker, said, “We are proud of the relationship with the city of Wichita. We are looking for that relationship to continue. This gives us the means and mechanism for that to continue. The company is negotiating with the state for an unspecified amount of incentives. That would be in addition to the 600 new jobs that the company committed to in 2009 in exchange for state incentives for its Learjet 85, a new all-composite aircraft to be assembled and finished in Wichita. The incentives were needed for the deal to make financial sense to Bombardier executives.”

Bombardier decided on Wichita as the number one area for the expansion due to the high concentration of skilled technical and engineering workers. The project is also aiming to expand upon the goals of the plant, to working on larger jets as opposed to just the light Learjet, another important benefit for Wichita.

Dieker commented, “This diversifies our workforce and gives us a greater stability within the organization as we weather some of the recessionary activities we’ve been in.” If the deal is approved work would commence in the spring with the initial payroll exceeding $47 million, with each job offering on average a salary of approximately $177,500.

The news was well received by all those at the press conference. Mayor Carl Brewer said, “With a project like this, the only thing you can say is, ‘Wow!’”

The Chairman of the Sedgwick County Commission, Dave Unruh, gave the project his support, “These projects are smart investments because they provide a positive return on investment.”

Robert Layton, the Wichita City Manager said, “The thing that is so important to us – and we don’t want to lose sight of this – is we’re diversifying our aviation cluster.”

In an effort to reintroduce airline jobs back home in the United States, US Airways, has moved some of its offshore call center operations back to its Winston-Salem, Reno, and Phoenix offices. This comes in light of the agreement made with the Airline Customer Service Employee Association (IBT/CWA) to handle all calls generated within the United States by the 1st November 2011.

Doug Parker, the Chairman and CEO of US Airways said, “This news is a testament to the positive relationship we have with the Airline Customer Service Employee Association. The addition of 400 jobs is extremely good news for these three communities, for the CWA/IBT, and for our customers who will continue to receive the outstanding service they have come to associate with US Airways.

The IBT/CWA Association Chairperson and Staff Representative, Velvet Hawthorne, added, “The CWA/IBT Association Union is excited to work with US Airways to bring jobs back into the Reservations work group. Nothing speaks louder than solidarity, when we all work together for a successful airline. We welcome our new Brothers and Sisters, helping us to provide excellent customer service to our passengers.”

In anticipation of the return of jobs to US soil, US Airways launched a new IVR (Interactive Voice Response) system, which is the first of its kind in the domestic aviation industry. It will speed up customer service and ensure complete satisfaction as it gives travel and personalized information including flight status, Dividend Miles account details, and more.

Kerry Hester, the Senior Vice President of Operations Planning and Support commented on the new system, “The IVR not only complements the broad range of self-service options available to customers on usairways.com and in the airports; it is also closely integrated with US Airways’ reservations centers so our agents have information about a customer, such as their name and existing reservation, as they are connected with callers. This makes the interaction easier and more efficient for customers.”

With the new aviation jobs brought back to the U.S. and the other call centers around the world including those in Liverpool, England, approximately 1900 call center personnel will be employed by the end of 2011. Of the 400 positions available, 150 of them will be aimed at the Phoenix reservations center and 200 at Winston-Salem. According to a recent survey, US Airways is considered to be one of the top 50 companies in America to work for, and is the only airline to be on this list. They also got 100% for the 6th time in a row on the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality indicator. Additionally, for the year 2010, US Airways was voted the number 1 airline in its class by the AQR (Airline Quality Rating) by Wichita State and Purdue Universities.

Cambridge Airport will be one of the 5 airports that will be open 24 hours a day for the duration of the Olympic Games to be held between the 21st July and 15th August 2012. This means more airport jobs to handle the increased passenger loads. This means additional airport security jobs, baggage checkers, airport retail staff and staff to work in the coffee shops and restaurants. Currently Cambridge already operates under a no noise restriction on a 24 hour basis as recognized by the Airport Coordination Limited (ACL).

The 24 hour will allow the airport to accept aircraft and passengers at full capacity during the day and in the early morning and night time hours, it will be allowed to accept 30% of the regional slot controlled traffic. ACL has released a new booking system which will ensure that the capacity meets the expected demand for the duration of the Games.

There is also an initiative in place to get more business aviation operators to use the airport including government fleets, charter flights, and private companies, where a once off fee is being offered for a guaranteed parking spot that includes take off and landing fees.

According to the Airport Manager at Cambridge, Richard Knight, “The 24/7 capacity, combined with our special events offering, gives our customers exceptional flexibility, particularly as we have a generous allocation of early morning and late evening slots. With hotels fully booked and events running into the evening, a day trip to the Olympics becomes a viable option.”

Since the beginning of this year, Cambridge Airport has reported a growth in business thanks to its new management team implementing their commercial strategy. The Airport Director, Archie Garden has increased the aviation business by 15 % from 2010 and sales of fuel are up by 37 %. The parking fee income has also increased by 90 % with training flights also rising year on year.

It is estimated that within the first 18 months of opening the new airport will add 100 aviation jobs to the area and this includes jobs in Pilot Training and through various brokers and aircraft companies. New instruments are being added as well, including advanced GPS, new instrument guidance systems which will be implemented with the Precision Approach Path Indicators (PAPI’s) so that the same high angle descents are possible just like London Airport.

Cambridge Airport has also been chosen by the Pilot Training College (PTC) as the location where its new training academy will open in June, offering two simulator rooms which are currently being built. To find out more about the various airport careers like this around the world, become a member of Airline Job Finder.

It has been 10 years since the fateful crashes, which brought down the Twin Towers on 9 September 2001, and as we look back on this decade, we analyze how the airline industry has fared, as we remember those who lost their lives that day.

$55 billion has been lost and 160,000 jobs were shared during that time, however, today the airline industry is smaller, but running smoothly with high security measures in place which have now been implemented correctly. Improvement has been seen in the number of a travel for example, last year, 720.4 million people through in the United States. This is even higher than the number of passengers that flew via a in the year 2000 the year before 9/11.

Although the industry has taken a huge knock is picking itself up and coming back strong is taken people a long time to trust in a troubled begin, but confidence is returning, not only in air travel, but also in the economy. The global business travel Association in Denver held their annual convention. Two weeks ago with the Executive Director Michael W. McCormick, hinting at a recovery.

He commented, “We’re not seeing record profits, but were also not seeing the end of a line travel as we know it. So have things changed for the better?”

This is the question that everyone has been asking. The air fares have remained extremely low and they have been challenges with airport security. Another difference from 10 years ago is that today a lines charge extra for various items such as checking a bag and other things that used to be part of the ticket price.

This can be seen by looking at figures of the domestic airlines. One airline reportedly made $3.4 billion, merely from charging checked bags. According to Peter Greenburg, the travel editor from CBS News, “some would argue that you make more money from ancillary fees, then you do operating the a plane, and that you’d like to figure out a way to sell us pillows and things while keeping the plane on the ground.” He said this jokingly at a panel discussion at the convention for business travel, however, Doug Parker, the CEO of US Airways replied, “It’s the right way to price the product.” In comparison, he mentioned how hotels charge various fees to their customers for additional extras. “Last night, I stayed at a hotel down the street and I wanted to get a bottle of water and it cost $6,” he said.

He mentioned that the idea had come up for airlines to start charging for water and the initial price was set at one dollar for a bottle. However, due to being high resistance from passengers the idea was dropped. He emphasized, “Six bucks in my hotel room last night for water! We just wanted to charge a dollar.”

This new procedure has created a slight inconvenience in terms of delays in boarding. People want to bring on much more luggage than they did before, and this adds to already overcrowded planes. One of the new changes being added by the TSA (transport security administration) is a limit on the number of passenger carry on is that are allowed.

“It’s becoming a huge problem for them. When you stand in line at the T.S.A., you see that the line is because of all those bags going through, not because of the people themselves being processed,” Mr. Parker said.

Another change is the amount of small domestic airlines that have come into being since 9/11. It has been mentioned that they are too many small airplanes and too many transport hubs. Parker says, “It has gotten way overbuilt.” While many jobs have been lost over the decade, many have been created as well, and to find out more about different airline jobs, airport jobs, and aviation maintenance jobs visit Airline Job Finder today.

Broken Arrow will soon be getting 300 aviation jobs thanks to the expansion of aviation company Flight Safety, whose products include the manufacture of flight simulators. The city relies on the aviation employment currently offered by the company and has encouraged them to stay in Broken Arrow by offering a great incentive package totaling $6 million and introducing 300 more aviation jobs to the area.

Chamber of Commerce President, Wes Smithwick commented, “Flight Safety jobs pay almost double the state average wage and that’s a huge deal. That’s the kind of job that a lot of people want but few get to recruit to their area.” The expansion will be good for the total economy and it is hoped that the new 375 thousand foot facility will bring more big businesses, shops and restaurants to the area. It also means that Broken Arrow could be known as the flight simulator capital and according to Senator Jim Inhofe, “The fact that they have made the decision to have this huge facility nails it down that they are never going to leave; that they are ours forever.”

In total over 31 thousand aviation and aerospace jobs will be added during this year, as indicated in the 15th Workforce and Young Professionals Study released during Aviation Week. The President of Aviation Week, Greg Hamilton, “2011 marks a year of transition for the A&D industry. The end of the shuttle era and cutbacks in defense spending are taking place concurrently with a rapid commercial aerospace manufacturing ramp up. While total jobs will rise, significant numbers of high-skill engineering jobs will be at risk, and our aerospace-management customers remain challenged finding key technology-leadership skill sets. Conducting this substantive Workforce Study each year allows Aviation Week to provide essential and actionable analysis for industry executives, professionals, and students.”

AAR Corp Aircraft Services, a 1.8 billion dollar aviation company, recently held a job fair to promote various aviation job openings in Salina and the company was very pleased with the turnout. About 500 people showed up with their resumes for the job fair in the hopes of getting a job with the overhaul, maintenance and repair company. The point of the job fair was to ascertain whether or not there would be enough interest for aviation industry jobs in Salina and by the looks of things, there are. Tim Rogers, the Executive Director of the Salina Airport Authority, “I think the AAR career fair has gone as planned,” Rogers said. “The response from Salina, Saline County and area job seekers has met, if not exceeded, AAR’s expectations.”

According to the VP of Operations for AAR MRO Group, Stan Mayer, “There was about six months last year, where all of our four facilities were full. We’re out looking for the possibility of additional facility space around the country. They’ve got some brand new facilities that are available, and they actually fit the regional airplanes pretty well. The footprint’s good. It’s in the middle of the country, so, the location is pretty good for the customer base that we’re looking after.”

The jobs entail all areas of aviation maintenance such as interiors, inspections, aircraft mechanics, sheet metal works, and avionics. Rogers explained the details, “We go through the airplane from the nose to the tail, and wing-tip to wing-tip, and check air-free systems on the airplane, open up all the inspection panels, look at the hydraulics, the electrical systems, look at the power plans, the whole airplane and make sure it’s repaired or maintained.”

Due to the recent Hawker-Beechcraft division closing down, there are plenty of out of work employees available in the Salina area.

Rogers said, “We have the airfield, airport facilities, a 12,300 foot-long runway.”

Mayer added, “We have customers, and we have contracts that we’re working on today. The need for the facility could be as early as the first of the year. If everything is there we’ll need, I think we can add something good for the Salina area.”

The Director of Recruiting for AAR Greg Dellinger, said, “We always need A&Ps (airframe and powerplant). We have seen those types of resumes, but not as many as you would need to start up. We can overcome that, absolutely. We’re adventure capitalists. We are obsessed with vertical surfaces. Through partnerships and teamwork, obstacles can be overcome. Workers are available here, but some tweaking may be needed. Do they need additional training? You bet, but who doesn’t?”

There are a number of graduates from the Kansas State University at Salina who visited the fair and Dellinger praised the school for, “educating to the skills that are in demand. It’s a very positive aspect.”

He said, “They have students in the pipeline, getting ready to graduate. Enrollment is upticking. It’s absolutely doable.”

With the positive outcome of the fair, AAR recruiters are planning to return to Salina in September or October to hold a true job fair with face to face interviews and offer actual positions. “All of that is contingent upon getting a signed facility agreement, and getting a customer to bring their aircraft in,” said AAR human resources recruiter, Barry Breckle.
Currently, AAR is negotiating with Pinnacle Airlines. Breckle said, “We’ve got to sell them on bringing their planes to Salina to work on. Their initial contract is out of Oklahoma City.”

If all goes well, airline work is expected to begin in February 2012. To find out more about the different types of aviation jobs that you can get, visit Airline Job Finder today and become a member.

Ryanair CEO, Micheal O’Leary announced a new string of flights from Manchester which is said to create up to 2000 new airline jobs. The 20 new routes will be added to the existing ones out of Manchester by the summer of 2012, giving them the delivery projection of 2 million passengers per year. The new routes announced will be to Milan, Barcelona, Paris, Rome, Ibiza, and Brussels. The initial influx of airline jobs will be in October when the airline will introduce 2 new aircraft and offer 250 aviation jobs including pilot jobs, crew jobs, and flight attendant jobs just to name a few. The remaining aircraft and jobs will be added up until 2012.

O’Leary said, “Ryanair is delighted to unveil Manchester as our 45th base with 26 routes. It is great news for Ryanair, for Manchester and terrific news for the industry and local economy.”

Although Ryanair had only 18 months ago cut flights from Manchester, the news comes amidst the partnership between the air carrier and Manchester City Airport to offer hundreds of budget flights, which has resulted in Ryanair’s continued involvement in this area and the reason for many jobs being posted there.

The deal has currently created over 600 jobs in the Manchester region and brought about 600 thousand more passengers to the area and it is hoped that this growing trend will continue as the expansion takes place over the next few months.

Spokane Community College’s Felts Field in Washington is the location for an exciting summer program offered for high school students to give them insight into the aerospace and aviation industry. The aim of the inaugural program is to offer students more information and pique interest in aviation maintenance jobs, air traffic controller jobs, and flight operations jobs where there is currently a demand for employees.

The program runs for 3 weeks and will offer the participants the chance to fly a plane and spend time in the Air Traffic Control Tower at Spokane International Airport. They will also learn to work with the materials used to build a plane and also get the opportunity to work on engines.

Hannah Jones from Inland Northwest High School spoke about this interesting career option, “I never knew there were openings in this field. This has been great.”

“I want to be a pilot in the Air Force, and this is about aviation,” said 17 year old Amber Arbanas. “It’s good for me to learn about airplanes, how they are made and how they are put together.”

It is hoped that this program will generate more interest in aerospace jobs, as there are about 80 aviation businesses in the Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho areas, which means there are plenty of jobs available. This was confirmed by Ken Logan, the president of L&M Precision Fabrication. “We’re in the process of taking on more aerospace work, and probably will be hiring six to eight more people before the end of the year. The business is continuing to grow. We are coming off two slow years, but we’re getting back to where we were.”

Adding to this, Boeing Co. spokesperson, Doug Adler said, “As of midway through the year, we’ve hired 2,000 so far in the Puget Sound area, and by the end of the year it should be between 4,000 and 5,000.” Boeing also released a market forecast for the next 20 years which shows that there will be a need for 33 thousand new places of which they are hoping to get the majority of the orders.

Adler continued, “We couldn’t be happier with something like that (the workshop). One of the biggest challenges we face is getting skilled workers hired. If people are looking for a job, the aviation industry is certainly a good place to look.”

To find out more about what kinds of aviation maintenance and air travel jobs there are, visit Airline Job Finder, where you will gain access to a huge job database and plenty of aerospace resources.

The unveiling of a new security screening protocol by the U.S Travel Association in March is set to stream line the travel and check in process for passengers and ensure safety and security of all American airports. The new system has been introduced due to various recent surveys revealing that most travelers are avoiding 2 to 3 trips annually, predominantly due to the hassles surrounding the stringent security screening that is currently in place.

It is shown that these evaded trips cost the U.S economy $85 billion and subsequently 900 thousand airport jobs. After a year-long study and analysis of the security screening measures that should be established, a report was issued to the U.S Congress entitled, “A Better Way: Building a World-Class System for Aviation Security” where Congress was encouraged to instigate the recommendations through positive policy decisions.

The panel of travel and security experts, along with the U.S Travel Association has three primary goals in mind with the reformed air travel security screening. Firstly, they wish to vastly improve upon the TSA checkpoint procedures whereby travelers are screened based on risk. Efficiency at the checkpoint and decreasing passenger wait times is vital.

Secondly, the report outlines that an increase in governmental cooperation will be instrumental in implementing better security responsibilities, and thirdly, risk assessment and management tools are to be used to restructure the way that America sees the aviation security segment.

The president and CEO of the U.S Travel Association, Roger Dow, said, “While our government and passengers deserve credit for preventing another terrorist attack like what happened nearly 10 years ago on 9/11, each day in the United States roughly two million air travelers are advised to arrive upwards of two hours before a flight in order to be processed through a one-size-fits-all security screening system. The country that put a man on the moon, invented the Internet and creates daily innovations in manufacturing can and must do better in screening passengers and improving our air travel experience. Air travel is the gateway to commerce and an improved experience is directly tied to job creation and a stronger economy.”

To help introduce the report, former Secretary Ridge commented, “A strong aviation security screening system must feature several characteristics, including efficient methods of deterring and interdicting terrorists and criminals; tailored security based upon risk assessment; frequent, clear communication with the traveling public; and cost-effective use of resources.”

For this new system to come into effect, certain sacrifices are going to be required from various sectors of the industry including airports, airlines, travel agencies, travelers, federal agencies and others.

“Dramatic policy shifts undermine the ability of our nation to create a secure and efficient aviation system, and demonstrate a lack of a long-term vision for aviation security,” Dow said. “TSA and its officers often bear unjustified public criticism for simply carrying out the ever-changing policies set by Congress and an unwillingness to date to embrace risk management. If this pattern is to change, Congress must set the tone and take on the responsibility of improving the current system.”

Some of the recommendations are as follows:

Implement a risk-based trusted traveler program.

Improve preparation of travelers.

Encourage fewer carry-on bags.

Reduce duplicative TSA screening for international arrivals.

Expand trusted traveler programs to qualified international passengers.

Give TSA authority over the entire checkpoint area.

Develop a comprehensive technology procurement strategy.

Implement well-defined risk management processes.

He concluded, “When combining the staggering economic consequences of the current system with the widely held views of the traveling public – and with the American way of life hanging in the balance – the picture becomes clear. We must find a better way and build a new traveler-focused system for aviation security.”

The new policy will certainly encourage growth in the airport security job sector and all other aviation jobs will be boosted as well due to the increase in passengers including pilot jobs, flight attendant jobs, and more.

SpiceJet, the new Indian Airline is currently searching for new pilots and cabin crew. The pilot jobs on offer amount to 150 while there are also 300 cabin crew jobs available. These will be based locally in India as SpiceJet plans to increase its regional status. To this end they have also purchased 15 Bombardier Q400 turboprop aircraft in December last year, which can carry 70-80 passengers each. Their base of operations is likely to be Hyderabad.

The CEO of SpiceJet, Neil Mills stated, “We will recruit 150 pilots and 300 cabin crew for the regional airline. We will recruit chief of pilots and chief of engineering for the regional operations as the aircraft is new for the Indian aviation market. These positions will be filled in by the expats and we are in the process of finalizing the names.”

Mills added, “We have finalized our plans and will be announcing them shortly. The northern part of the country is well connected and we will look to focus in the south. We will do destinations that are one to one-and-a-half hours from Hyderabad and operations will start from June.”

Due to the high crude oil prices of late, there has been some concern over the regional expansion, but Mills has assured the public that things will go ahead as planned. “There is some pain in the sector right now because of the oil prices, but we will continue to expand. There is huge opportunity in the tier II and the tier III cities and that is where we will be looking to expand.”

SpiceJet, being a low cost airline is set to enter the market as a feeder airline to carry the traffic to and from legacy airlines like British Airways. Mills commented, “Low cost airlines have already taken over the feeder traffic passenger chunk for onward journeys. Legacy carriers cannot deliver at the prices at which low cost airlines can on the smaller city network.”

According to experts, SpiceJet will have to take full advantage of the tier I cities, which are those that have a population of over 5 million. Director of Aerospace and Defence at KPMG, Amber Dubey stated, “No airline can afford to be too focused on the tier II and tier III cities play. The Paramount debacle has shown this already. There has to be connectivity between the metros as well. And since two metro route operations are allowed in the south, airlines need to develop hoping routes and get feeder traffic in to these routes.”
