The newest member of the Carnival fleet, Carnival Magic, made its debut appearance in the U.S. serenaded by Grammy Award winning band Maroon 5 there to perform at the celebration in Galveston, the ship’s homeport. Over 4000 guests turned up to witness the 3690 passenger vessel sail into Galveston, Texas, after completing its Transatlantic voyage. They were then treated to an exclusive hour long concert from Maroon 5 set to the backdrop of the ship at Pier 21.

Carnival Magic consist of many new innovations in the cruise line industry, including the Caribbean style RedFrog Pub with its own private label beer, an open air recreation area called SportSquare, which boasts the first outdoor fitness area and rope course at sea, and the WaterWorks Aqua Park offering a 312 foot long water slide. The Captain added, “For crew, they have to train. Am I ready for an accident? Do I know the local resources? How would we evacuate? Is the equipment working? Do I know how to use it? Take backboards as an example. Not everyone knows exactly how to use one. It’s not like people don’t train, they do train, for fire, STCW. You just have to throw in more medical. I know why now, I have firsthand knowledge. Now, when I’m training crew, I say ‘This is real, you have to pay attention.’”

During the Cruise Tourism Report launch that took place on the luxurious cruise ship, MSC Sinfonia in Durban Harbor Friday, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, the South African Tourism Minister stressed the emphasis on South Africa being more involved in the cruise industry.

“We need to grow this industry which has a huge potential of creating cruise jobs and to grow the economy,” he said. “When I came here, I expected a modern passenger terminal. There is a lot of work to do. All spheres of government need to work together to ensure that there is investment.”

The tourism MEC for KwaZulu-Natal, Mike Mabuyakhulu, also spoke at the launch about the advantages of bettering the cruise industry in the country.
 
“One of the major coups we have pulled off is to engage the organizers of the Sea Trade to convene a Sea Trade Africa workshop in Durban. We have developed a strategy and an action plan to develop the cruise tourism potential of our province and the rest of the East Coast of Africa,” he said.

He went on to say that, “The conference will hear from cruise line experts on what they want to see from Africa as a destination in terms of terminal operations, infrastructure and hospitality.” The workshop will discuss all aspects of cruises including shore excursions, and passenger market demands.
 
“Today’s launch of the cruise tourism report therefore signals a clear commitment from the government to ensure that cruise tourism becomes one of the key pillars of the tourism industry,” said Mabuyakhulu.

American Cruise Lines is set to debut an all new inland cruising sternwheeler in 2012 which will tour the river starting with a 7 night cruise.
