Yesterday, (1st November 2011) the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel and Resort hosted the 2012 Hospitality Job Fair to highlight the many different hospitality related careers that one can follow. Over 600 hospitality jobs are available to local Bermudians who will work at some of the most luxurious hotels in Bermuda. The fair was part of a joint initiative between the Bermuda Hotel Association and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Before the fair, the Bermuda Hotel Association spokesperson, John Harvey said, “All someone needs to do is smile! We’ve got 50 different categories; you might have the desire to be in accounting, you might have the desire to be in carpentry, air conditioning, horticulture. Think of this industry as a career not a hustle.”

Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Kim Wilson said, “One of our aims is to help the unemployed reinvent themselves so that they are job ready and can work within the current job market. For more, it means starting a program to upgrade or change their skills. For some, it means taking a job that they may feel is below their skill level, while they learn new skills to meet the requirements for a better paying position.”

Many hotel resort jobs are available including wait staff, housekeeping staff, front desk personnel, conference managers, chef jobs and more. The jobs bring some relief to the Bermudian people who have been struggling with a growing unemployment rate. It has risen steadily from 3% as of the year 2000, to approximately 8% this year.

The Hospitality Job Fair attracted hundreds of unemployed Bermudians who were warned to bring 10 to 12 hard copies of their resumes and be prepared to fill out applications all day. Many people are excited about the opportunities being offered in the hotel business, some even turning to this as a brand new career, coming from fishing and construction backgrounds.

Similarly in Dubai, a career day was held by Starwood Hotels and Resorts. They offered walk-in positions to candidates who were vetted and interviewed for various different jobs in different departments across the 4 Points and Sheraton Hotels in Dubai. General management teams from the Sheraton were on hand to answer questions and give applicants advice.

Sheraton area manager for Dubai and General Manager of the Sheraton Dubai Creek Hotel and Towers, Heinz F Grub, said, “We’re looking to find the best talent in Dubai to support the company’s growth, and are stepping out in the market to attract hospitality professionals who fit our brands, values and company philosophy.”

Director of Human Resources at the Sheraton Dubai Creek Hotel and Towers, Paarth Mathur, added “The open careers day will be an excellent opportunity for us to interact with candidates, and help them experience the Starwood Service Culture firsthand. Our preferred candidates will have a compatible service outlook, and will understand the importance of excellence and customer centricity that lies at the heart of Starwood’s operations. We can promise the right candidates a rewarding career full of personal and professional development through support and training.”

With only these 2 job fairs, it is easy to see that the tourism industry is still going strong, despite financial difficulties that many are still experiencing, and that a career in the hospitality industry is a viable option. It offers stability for full time staff, a somewhat flexible work schedule, and ongoing training to aid career advancement. Discover your ultimate hotel resort job on Cruise Job Finder.

Norwegian Cruise Lines’ newest ship, the Norwegian Breakaway is set to depart on its maiden voyage in May 2013, with bookings opening today (17th October 2011) for her launch in April 2013. The first cruise will depart from Southampton, UK on a 7 day transatlantic voyage arriving in New York where it will be based, offering year round cruises. She will embark on her maiden voyage on the 12th May 2013 travelling to Bermuda in a series of 22, 7 day cruises until October 2013. The Norwegian Breakaway can accommodate 4000 passengers and cruise liner jobs are plentiful.

Aside from the Norwegian Breakaway, her sister ship, the Norwegian Getaway, will also launch the following year in April 2014 and provide the ultimate in mega cruise liner luxury as part of Norwegian Cruise Lines series of mega ship called Project Breakaway. Many hospitality jobs are available on this cruise ship as well, so now is the perfect time to get your resume up to scratch.

The staterooms on board are magnificent and are described by Norwegian Cruise Lines as being “modern boutique hotel meets the sea” with special 2 bedroomed family villas offered along with contemporary Courtyard Penthouse suites. CEO, Kevin Sheehan commented on the design, “We’re trying to trend a little bit younger to bring a new group of people onto the ships.” These main staterooms each provide guests with a special access card to the Haven, an exclusive relaxation area consisting of a restaurant, cocktail bar, and concierge desk as well as a private spa and fitness center.

“We listened to our guests, we listened to travel agents and we listened to the press. We tried to take (into account) everything that people would say was not perfect on the Epic or what people would want and that we think would be very exciting,” said Sheehan. NCL has been working in conjunction with Tillberg Design of Sweden to design the new cabins.

The launch cruise will cost $749 per person, based on double occupancy, with tickets for the official maiden voyage in May costing $1199 per person, also based on double occupancy. It was announced that the Norwegian Breakaway would replace the smaller Star and that it would be the largest cruise liner to home port in New York. Currently it is still being built in the German Meyer Werft shipyard.

In an attempt to encourage more passengers from all over the world to explore the new ships that are set to improve the brand, Norwegian Cruise Lines has also just launched a new ad campaign with the slogan “Cruise like a Norwegian.” The video encompasses all aspects of the cruise life with different slogans, such as “Party like a Brazilian, “Surf like a Hawaiian, and “Dine like a Parisian”, ending off with the “Cruise like a Norwegian” slogan as the sail away party continues.

Sheehan explained that the new promotional material would appear on their website and other advertising spots, “The company has been working hard over the last four years to improve the brand and that they felt it was the right time to put forward this invitation to potential customers and also create interest in the brand. They are hoping that it will help people see them as one of the best possible vacation options for them.”

New plans to revive and building beach resort and hotels in different parts of the world, mean more resort jobs will be available very soon. Starting in Nassau, the Amelia Island Plantation will be expanding, thanks to the approval of Omni’s $80 million plans by the Nassau County Commissioners. Aside from adding sections to the resort hotel, there are also plans for a convention center and commercial park with Omni looking to add about 100 hospitality jobs once complete. Everyone is very happy about the new expansion, with Commissioner Barry Holloway announcing, “Nassau County is open for business.”

Commissioner Danny Leeper echoed the sentiments, praising Omni for investing in the county. “It’s all about jobs. We’re creating jobs, we’re bringing in new jobs, we’re keeping jobs. I’m excited that Omni’s a very good corporate citizen and a very good corporate partner for Nassau County, and I welcome them and thank them so much for what they’re doing.”

According to Nassau County Economic Development Board Executive Director, Steve Rieck, the development has also received a tax credit award of $210,000 as soon as the jobs become available. “We think that this project is going to go a long way towards what we’re all trying to achieve here in terms of a better working environment and a larger economic pie for us all to enjoy. I’d like to say on the record that NCEDB fully supports and will offer whatever assistance we can in the future to making this project successful.

Aside from the increase in resort jobs, the project will also employ many construction workers for the expansion who will work to add on the 155 new rooms to the resort hotel, build a new 3 story parking structure, add on an extra 41,000 feet to the convention center, and create a new commercial center consisting of 2 restaurants, improved walkways, and changes to the traffic patterns at the spa and shops.

Halfway around the world in India, the Novatel Varun Beach is just about ready to be operational, after almost 4 years of work. According to Chairman and Managing Director, Prabhu Kishore, the resort is between 90 and 95% complete and would probably be ready in November. He told the media, “We started the work on the project in 2008. Sea Valley Private Ltd, our company, started the work and later on we entered into an agreement with Accor Hotels group and Novatel is their brand. There are three Novatel properties in the country, two in Hyderabad and one in Mumbai, and Varun Beach will be the fourth.”

It is expected that around 300 to 400 hospitality jobs will be created, once the hotel is open for business. This is a 5 star establishment which has already been awarded the Best Hotel Project – Pan India for 2011. Kamal Nath, the Union Minister, said “It is an honor and it is a great tribute to our team working tirelessly for the past three-and-a-half years on this prestigious project.”

The unique aspect of this hotel that will draw visitors from all over, is the fact that it offers the biggest convention center around. Nath said, “Previously, big conferences could not be held here for want of a really big convention hall. Now we have one here on the beach and it will be big attraction.”

These are just a taste of the new hotel and tourism jobs that are currently available in the hospitality sector. You can see that these types of jobs are popular and always in demand no matter where you are located. If you want to learn more about the hospitality industry and what is required to land a beach resort career, visit Cruise Job Finder and become a member.

New resorts opening in the Bahamas and Australia are bringing over 800 beach resort jobs to those areas in the next few months. The development in Australia, called the Wyndham Hervey Bay Resort, cost $120 million and is situated along the Fraser Coast. It will offer about 100 hospitality jobs to the area and developer Charles Richards unveiled the resort group’s plans to attract tourists and investors.

He told local dignitaries and business leaders in a recent meeting, “The mass media buy would include setting up billboards promoting the resort and the Fraser Coast at hot spots around the country including Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport which has an annual tourist traffic flow of more than 63 million.”

He also stated that the development has been a long process and there were times during the global financial crises that hit the world, they were skeptical about even making it. They prevailed and because of this they are able to over 120 resort jobs to the region, and according to Richards, “at least 80 percent will be local”.

Yet another resort development costing about $900 million is planned for the south Eleuthera area of the Bahamas. This resort project aims to introduce between 600 and 700 cruise and tourism related jobs. The project involves the establishment of a cruise port along with 5 luxury resort facilities in the surrounding area.

It is estimated that between various construction jobs will be offered to locals when Phase 1 of the South Point Resort Project goes into development. The CEO of Beka Development, who is running the project, explained, “This is a five-six star property, with quality amenities and high standards of service, phenomenal golf courses with water views and a residential community. We anticipate doing on a separate parcel a cruise port, entertainment and retail district. We also anticipate that there will be somewhere between 500-1000 Bahamians employed on the construction phase under direct contract, and with support services and suppliers, there will be significantly more than that.”

He also addressed the resort employment on completion of the resort, stating, “On a permanent basis, the number of jobs in Phase I could be 600-700 people.”

The desire to introduce a cruise port to the area has been met with some concern although Mr. Evans has reassured everyone that they are environmentally conscious. He has also confirmed that his development would not be using Government land.

“We ultimately desire to put a cruise port in there. The cruise port generates a critical mass that supports a lot of the amenities package. We have looked at three different sites for a cruise port. All three sites, and whatever we’re doing, will be on private land, not government land. In our plans, we do not plan on asking the Government for any kind of Crown Land to do the project; all this will be done on private land.”

With regards to the environmental impact, Mr Evans said, “The cruise point would be designed such that no ‘cuts’ would have to be made in the ocean bed or coastline. The three locations have been looked at with environmental sensitivity, and in none of the three do we have to put in a cut into the beach or a cut into the ocean. We’re extremely sensitive to preserving the beauty and natural resources of land in the Bahamas.”

Marriott International, one of the biggest hotel chains in the world is aiming to offer around 50 thousand resort jobs by the end of 2011 and to help spread the word, they have decided to offer a Facebook game similar to the popular Farmville and Cityville games which have over 135 million active monthly users combined. This game, called My Marriott Hotel, will allow users to buy a restaurant and all the equipment needed to run it. They will hire and train employees as well as serve guests and all this while working on a budget.

The executive vice president of Marriott’s Global Human Resources, David Rodriguez says that they are looking to expand its markets outside of the United States and also looking to attract people between the ages of 18 and 27. “We must find new ways to interest them in hospitality careers. This game allows us to showcase the world of opportunities and the growth potential attainable in hospitality careers, especially in cultures where the service industry might be less established or prestigious.”

The game has been created in English, French, Arabic, Spanish, and Mandarin and currently has 12 thousand players with 270 thousand page views. It has been found that the majority of users are from the United States, India and Egypt.

At the moment, Marriott employs 129 thousand people around the world and future plans include 50 new hotels and resorts being built over the next 4 years including in Santa Fe, Saint Kitts, Guyana, Georgetown, and 24 others around the Asia/Pacific region.

To this end the game is expected to create a lot of hype around the job openings and also give people interested in a hospitality career a better understanding of what the resort jobs are about. Another way that you can find out about the different kinds of resort and hotel jobs is to join the Cruise Job Finder website. Here you can learn about all the different kinds of jobs working in the cruise ship industry, as well as in the resorts industry, and in the yacht crewing industry.

“It gives people a realistic view for the kind of decisions that have to be made and the pace of the work,” said Rodriguez. There is a link in the game, “Do It For Real” that will lead you to the company’s career recruitment page.

Social media is something that the hotel industry has embraced since it first started as a way to stay connected with guests, and the social gaming aspect that Marriott has taken is very unique.

Senior vice president for hospitality sales at Signature Worldwide, Holly Zoba said, “At this point they are taking it pretty seriously. They’re scratching their head still a bit wondering where it belongs. Is it a customer service thing? Is it a sales thing? I don’t think all of those things have been fleshed out – but they’re working on it.”

Rodriguez also commented about the importance of social media to the hotel business, “That’s why we’re in it. Our business is all about relationships. The relationship with our customers. The relationship with our associates. And in the 21st century, social media is absolutely an indispensable part of keeping strong relationships with these stakeholders. It gets to the point where if you’re not there you may not have a problem today, but if you’re not in there playing with it, you’re going to be missing a big piece of tomorrow’s relationships with consumers and employees.”

Two brand new resorts planned for Wales and the Hudson River Valley area are promising lots of new resort jobs. The world class resort planned in Wales is said to bring 600 jobs, whilst the new Rosendale will bring 1000 new resort jobs to the Hudson River Valley area, and inject roughly $200 million into the economy.

The Williams Lake Project in Kingston, where the Rosendale Resort is to be built will provide a much needed economic boost to the area, and businesses in the area were briefed about the specific details by Project Manager for Hudson River Valley Resorts, LLC Tim Allred. According to Allred, about 150 people would be employed per year for each phase of the construction, lasting approximately 10 years, with a total of 300 permanent resort jobs on offer when the resort is complete.

The resort will offer 130 hotel rooms as well as 160 residential housing units, a fitness center, day spa, meditation studio, wellness center, and an outdoor recreation area linked to the Ulster County rail trail system. The project is an exciting part of the growth of the area which is what Allred wanted to leave the business community with. He said, “The economic development benefits are dramatic, the jobs are much needed around here, and they are good quality jobs that fit in with what folks say they want for this region; green tourism and green technologies.”

As far as the Wales resort jobs go, 600 new hospitality jobs are set to be created in one of the most rundown parts of the country in Holyhead, Anglesey. The site was previously owned by Anglesey Aluminum and has now been purchased by Land and Lakes Ltd. The last 18 months have seen Land and Lakes (a subsidiary of the Kingmoor Park Properties Ltd) working closely with the locals to develop the resort.

The firm’s leader Richard Sidi said, “Our objective is to create a ‘quality destination’ leisure resort of national significance to provide a sustainable economic legacy for the area and we believe that there will never be a better opportunity than now to realize that objective and to boost the area’s tourism industry. This is a unique site in a unique location and we are hugely excited about developing our plans for this flagship leisure resort which will include extensive local amenities.”

Kingmoor Park Properties Ltd have indicated that the site is already a tourist destination, since it is located next to the Penrhos Coastal Park, but there are no accommodation facilities and recreational areas for people to make the tourism sustainable all year round. Anglesey County Council’s economic development spokesman Alex Aldridge, said, “Anglesey is already a well-known tourist destination, which attracts countless visitors each year – a quality development of this nature would add greatly to its varied tourism destination offer.”

The plan includes the construction of apartments, world class lodges that fit in with the natural surrounds, and facilities like a sports hall and indoor pool.

Aside from the increase in job opportunities for the area, the local businesses would also experienced a remarkable boost in sales, due to produce and supplies for the resort being sourced locally. Before any planning applications are sent away however, Land and Lakes wants to get the public’s opinion and will host various consultations and meetings in this regard.

The land of the old aluminum smelting business is currently being offered with the condition that the buyer generates at least 500 jobs for the area. Anglesey Aluminium, which closed its door in 2009, said, “As part of the drive to boost the local economy in Holyhead, we have signed an option agreement with a tourism development company which will allow the construction of a holiday leisure resort.”

First Minister Carwyn Jones commented, ”This development will significantly enhance the tourism offer of both Anglesey and North West Wales.”

To find out what kind of resort employment might be on offer, have a look at Cruise Job Finder under the Resort Jobs section.

With the shift to summer, many people all over the country are looking for summer jobs, so if you have a bit of an adventurous streak, and want to make money whilst exploring, Alaska is the place to go. This summer tourism jobs in Alaska are expected to be increasingly available to students and young adults in various parts of the tourism sector. The state of Alaska receives hundreds of visitors every year during its summer seasons and there are plenty of choices when it comes to summer employment.

National and State Park Jobs

Working in one of the state parks or national parks such as the Denali National Park is a great opportunity to get experience in different aspects of outdoor work. For example you can work at the camps and provide assistance with activities and work at the resort. Then you can also find outdoor work in the park as a ranger, where you will make sure that people are safe going out on drives and check on the wildlife.

Hospitality Jobs

There are plenty of tourist hotspots that open up during summer and Alaska work as a waitress, bar manager, hotel manager, or retail assistant is available. Chef jobs are also readily available in the Alaskan restaurants and hotels that open their arms to tourists during this time. In fact many businesses are only open during the summer, so there is an increased need for hard working individuals in Alaska as far as hospitality jobs are concerned.

Cruise Line Jobs

Cruise ships from all the major cruise line company descend up on the shores of Alaska in droves for the summer season, so cruise ship employment is also a viable option whether you live in Alaska and you want to get a cruise line job down the coast, or if you want to come into Alaska to find a job after working on board a cruise ship. Aside from the on board positions, cruise ship jobs are also found on shore, whether it is running excursions for a cruise line or working in a cruise line company’s office or call center.

Tour Guide Jobs

One of the most exciting jobs in Alaska has to be that of a tour guide or excursion guide. Alaska has some of the most abundant wildlife populations in the country and in just a few short distances from a resort or camp site, you can find bears, caribou herds, and tons of other animals. Game fishing resorts employ fishing assistants who will go out with the game fishing vessels and help the new fishermen with their technique. The tour guide job requires you to have some experience dealing with the kinds of animals that you will be going to see, and you should also have safety and first aid skills. Tour guide jobs can be taken one step further with adventure tour jobs. This can see you leading a cycling tour group, or you could find yourself being a hiking tour guide.

Whatever your skill set and whatever kinds of jobs you love doing, you are sure to find something in Alaska. Working in Alaska is probably the most exciting thing you can do for summer and will give you so many opportunities to experience the beauty and splendor of the state, as well as offer you a clear insight into various kinds of Alaskan careers.
