  • Women’s Boxing to Become an Olympic Sport

    As the 2012 Olympics in London approach, history will be made as women’s boxing is going to be one of the Olympic sports. The decision to include this as an Olympic sport officially has been met with some contention. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided last August that there would be 36 places for female fighters to compete in the London Games. The three classes have been included which are the flyweight category which is 48 to 51 kgs, the lightweight which is 56 to 60 kgs, and the middle weight which is 69 to 75 kgs. Olympic committee minister, Tessa Jowell, called this a “historic, landmark moment”.   • Three Pitching Jobs Available for the Florida Marlins

    The Florida Marlins Baseball team is busy looking for new pitchers for the new season. The number 2 spot has already gone to Ricky Nolasco, with the three other pitching jobs being contended for by 6 other top pitchers which went a combined 28-34 last year. One of the front runners, Chris Volstad, said that there would be some strong competition and that would make everyone pitch their best. Along with ace starter Josh Johnson, the Marlins expect to have a great season and hope to get excellent 3-4- and 5 pitchers who can be consistent and keep up with the 1 and 2 pitchers.     With the three year mark being reached yesterday in London leading up to the Olympic Games in 2012, it seems that all is on track for the event. Sebastian Coe, former British Olympic gold medalist, and chairman of the London Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games stated that everything was going according to schedule and that they have already followed through with many of the promises made during the bid in Singapore four years ago.     The Pan American Games (Pan Am Games) is an exciting all American quad-annual sporting event, the next of which is to be held in 2011 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Bids are already coming for the 2015 Games due to be held in November, with Toronto, Canada making an astonishing $2.4 Billion bid for the hosting rights. Currently, other cities that are in the running are Lima, Peru, and Bogota, Columbia. The Ontario Premier, Dalton McGuinty was handed a copy 233 page bid book by the Bid Chairman, David Petersen, which outlines the plans for the event including a $1 Billion athletes’ village.     Former Bucs (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) coach, Jon Gruden is taking up a new position it seems, and will be working in the booth alongside Jaws and Mike, commentating on the popular ESPN show, Monday Night Football. Gruden will replace Tony Kornheiser in this spot, after Kornheiser left the show for various reasons. Gruden was fired as Bucs coach after losing 4 games in a row and missing the 2008 playoffs – this after he led the Tampa Bay team to its first Super Bowl in 2003.     In a recent study of the NFL and college football in America, it was found that the number of minority head coaches, as well as offense and defense coaches, has been catching up over the past few years. According to the executive director of Black Coaches and Administrators, Floyd Keith, the number is still not where it should be. Since 2002, when the last study revealed that 3.5 percent of head coaches and 5 percent of offense and defense coordinators represented the minority, the number of minority coaches at college level has increased marginally, and currently in the NCAA’s Football Bowl Division there are 7.5 percent of head coaches and 15 percent offense and defense coordinators that are of the minority.  Keith compares the 7.5 percent to the nearly 19 percent that have head coach...
